New Workshop & House tidy up

Recommended Posts

Dan.gerous

Well, as you will have gathered we are leaving the Farm as it is closing down and moving onto the next thing, which for now is a Dairy Farm just outside of Dumfries.

The job comes with a house, and to say the house is disappointing would be an understatement! Anyway, no point dwelling on the negatives, and instead focus on improving it for our stay before we make the move to France.

The biggest issue for me is the complete lack of outbuildings on the property, so I will once again be embarking on a building project in order to create a garden shed, dog kennels and a new workshop for me.

The remit is to spend as close to $0 on these buildings as we dont own the house and will not be here long term - however I refuse to just "make do" as only have one life and live it to the full.

So for your entertainment, you guys can follow me on another building project or three :-)

Concept sketches and ideas soon, I have already got leads on potential free materials by demolishing buildings. Buckle up and get ready for the ride!!! Dans DIY season two is about to begin.....

In between handfuls of popcorn and sipping your drink, where do you get the blackhood club member badge? I have four of them!

Oh, no secret handshake, discounts at major superstore chains, secret headquarters,  preferential treatment at job interviews?

That's a bit disappointing :-(

Maybe my new workshop should become the Blackhood world HQ....

So no more pigs?  And no more weeks or months at sea?

Swapping pigs for cows, going to miss them as really enjoyed the time there.

My job remains the same, my wife is the farmer. I'm looking at changing back to tugboats  as that was more interesting than ferries, got to help build ports in Russia and Finland and numerous other large construction jobs from Europe to the caspian sea. Will retire to the farm when we move to France 🇫🇷

First though, going to make this tired farm house a pleasant place to live. Will post photos of it when I get home next.

Where about's near Dumfries, Dan. As you know I'm often over that way up Locharbriggs.

Just down from there, you would pass through Torthorwald which is our turn to go down Linns Road, and we are at Linns Dairy.

Your welcome anytime, teapot always hot.

I wish you the very best of luck.  Perhaps you’ll put down some roots?

Not at this house, its just a temporary stop.

100% ready to settle though as its too much effort moving every year or two -   its something like our 15th move over 5 countries in 22 years of marriage!

Here is my first idea.

It isn't just a simple box as I wanted a bit of style and a covered in outdoor work area which would be handy on a wet day if you needed to be doing lots of dusty or smoky work.

Forgot to add a wood stove, but I will be sourcing one free from somewhere!

Something you'd build?

Or rather get a factory done unit?

Just build it myself, probably knock down some woiden garages in the city and use the components. They are usually free :-) and by the time I'm done nobody would guess.

I think it would work well, and oversize material wouldn't get wet while you were cutting to size.

Needs enough room to build the FEL etc probably dedicate it to metalwork and do any woodwork outside on nice days.

We're intending to separate our two workshop areas here as well.

Keeps the grease outta the wood products and

Sawdust outta the greasy stuff.

IMHO adds a safety factor by keeping more flammables combustibles burnables away from the welding/metal work section.

I highly recommend it, that's what we did at our current place.

It makes everything so much easier, sawdust no longer inside everything and grease no longer getting on freshly sanded wood.

The safety aspect alone, it's amazing how far sparks fly while cutting metal!

For a stove Dan. How about making one from a gas bottle? Empty one of course. :D

Full one would certainly heat things up faster.
