Meteorites (Tau Herculid)

Anybody set out last night to see if the "storm" occurred?

Treasurer and I did, from about 10:30 until 1:30

We saw a total of about a dozen or so during that time, but the 'predicted storm' did not materialize.

Two of them were quite large and of those I'm not sure that one of them was part of the comet trail.  It was going the wrong direction, and too fast to be one of that brood.  It was to the Northwest, and nearly what I would classify as a 'fireball'.  It lit up, dimmed, and lit up again.

One of the sighted ones was very strange indeed.  It did not 'streak' at all !  Just a bright light that lit for about a half second, then out again.  If we had not both seen it, I would have thought my eyes playing tricks.  Had to be coming straight at us for that to happen.

To be fair, they did say it would be an 'all or nothing' event, but if you weren't watching and it did happen, you would have missed it!

Still a nice way to spend the evening relaxing in a lawn chair watching the sky.  A nice cool breeze blowing, bats hovering over us collecting the bugs before they could bite us, tree frogs singing, quiet.....................................

I was out on the end of our dock between 1:30 and 2:00 am.  It was partly cloudy.  Didn't see any.

Eh... Jeff... I was watching... up to after 2:00...

Clear skies. Out in the middle of nowhere. No light pollution.

Didn't see a darn thing... :P

I think I saw a map at some point while reading up on it after hearing about it several days ago.  It appeared that this was mostly an 'East Coast' event, and more specifically from about NY and south.

So you'ze guyz might be a bit too far west to have seen anything.

We actually saw MORE in the couple hours preceding the predicted 'peak' than during that half hour window.  At one point around 11:30 EDT there were three almost simultaneously.  Not exactly a 'storm', but pretty cool to see anyway.

I also read that we actually supposedly passed through THREE of the previous paths of that comet, but the 'fragmentation' in 1995 was what would have caused the 'storm' had we passed through a dense part of the trail.

That 'almost fireball' was the high light (see what I did there?) of my evening, and that was around 10:40 EDT

OH OH... I see. Well, I saw it online... so I thought I would take a peek....

Would have been nice if an alien had held out a flashlight or something... as... I was pretty bored... :hide: :laughing-rolling:

Wowzers!  Hadn't thought about one of them ball of fire coming straight at me!  I believe I'd jump off the deck and take off running to the right.

:text-lol:  If it had lasted more than a split second, I'm sure I would have done just that !

I remember a storm when I was in elementary school, maybe 6th grade, (that was back when Grant took Richmond), my brothers and I were watching a shower and alla sudden,  THOUSANDS!!!! and I'm not exaggerating, started flying at us.  It was like when the Enterprise goes into warp drive... I actually got a bit nauseous and had to sit down... it was THAT intense !  Never seen anything like that again since, but one of the November showers about 20 years ago was pretty spectacular too... but NOTHING like that!  That one we had to stop counting because we lost track in about ten minutes... we couldn't count them as fast as they fell.  Watched for about 2 hours from about 2AM to 4AM.  Went to bed and watched them still falling in the dawn light.
