Wheel Horse 42" single stage snowblower

Recommended Posts

mort

I have a Wheel Horse (not Toro) 42" single stage snowblower. I don't have a manual for it and can not find any serial number/model number tags on it. The original owner had a nylon rope to turn the chute and also had the 4 little pulleys loose (not bolted down tight).

I was wondering what is the best material (thin steel cable?) to use to turn the chute and does it work best with all 4 pulleys locked down tight? I have never installed a snowblower to any Wheel Horse that I have ever owned (since 1983) only mower decks and snow blades. It is unclear if that flag is suppose to have a spring attached to it or not and if the standard mower deck lift is what is lowering/raising the snowblower. It looks from the online pictures that it is bolted somewhere else? I still have parts from old Snapper/Massey tractors/snowblowers so I am not sure what parts are Wheel Horse or from other tractors. Any help would be appreciated before I try to install it.

Thanks,

Mort

Snowthrower DNA

All have 2 idler sprockets for the drive chain. Started out as 37" wide and the added wings make them 42" wide.

1966-67 model ST-376

1968 model 6-1211

1969 6-6211 plus 6-9111

1970-72 model 6-6212 plus 6-9112

All without front quick hitch so not a direct fit for 1973 and later tractors. Snowthrower rear frame mounts in the front of the tractor frame using 2 bushings and a long 3/8-16 x 8-1/2" bolt.

Hi Mort,  check out my thread on the restoration of the one I picked up last year.  Some good tips in there for you.

Hi Jeff,

I don't have time or the capability to do all of this and I don't weld at all.

Too bad Wheel Horse didn't come up with kit to do this.

What is the newest tractor this blower would fit on? Any B or C series?

I don't even know how I got this old snowblower as the oldest tractor I own is a 1978 C161 and that has tach-a matic

Can that blower hook up to a 310-8 if i took off the tach-a-matic or does something else need to be modified?

Thanks,

Mort

I believe it could work... My 1980 C-175 had a hole through the front of the frame that would accept that long bolt, but the attach-a-matic was in the way.

Removing the Attach-a-matic from my machine would mean that the hood hinges had no place to bolt onto, and throwing snow without a hood is just ... silly ...

If you can find someone that has the later mounting setup, it will bolt right up to that blower chassis.

You might find that the idler arm pulleys don't line up as on my 175.

This file should be similar to yours, I used some #12 gauge stranded electrical wire I had laying around & 2 round terminal ends to replace my turn cable, works great. The flag hooks into the upper hole on the short lift bracket.

I also have spare shorter brackets you can bolt on it so you can use your Tach-A-Matic front mount...

If lift rod is different I have one of those too...

Hi Blasterdad,

How much do you want for those shorter brackets?

Thanks,

Gary

The wire cable used for the lifting of garage doors...the wire holding the door springs is perfect for the Sno-blower.  Available at Home Depot and other Box stores.  :occasion-xmas:  You want very flexible stuff.

Sometimes referred to as "wire rope".  I tried the 1/8" stuff commonly used for garage doors and found it's 'bending radius' a bit too large to work well around the crank shaft.  Right now I've got 1/16" on mine and it held up for a few uses last winter.  Time will tell if it's adequate strength for long term or not.  I got a 33' piece on Amazon for something like $10 bucks or so...  if it works for 2 or 3 years, I've got plenty left over... unless I use it to restring all of the Treasurer's wind chimes.

I don't know if anyone has answered this directly... but no, the pulleys are supposed to turn freely.

@mort  used these electrical lugs ,https://www.amazon.com/Southwire-LUG250K-6AD-1PK-Mechanical- on side of chute base for a very solid go to cable point , also make up a snow slider , plastic circular base gasket for that chute , use super lube on it for very easy chute swing . my chute guides move to assist swing , auger looks very good , use a specific chain/ cable lubricant on the auger chain , 1/2" deflection , adjustment . also detail lubricant in that idler pulley spring tension frame set up , the easier it follows , spring tension , the better it works . never let the drive chain dry out , I lube mine before and after use , never had my 1/8 " cable , chute pull fail . like most w/h attachments, if you detail its function , lubricate all movement areas , they work better . like I  said my chute guides swivel , use super lube on them and related base mount/ swing point . pete

I got 3/32" for the new safety cables at the shop where I had the replacement springs made. (One spring broke and the safety cable did its job but I replaced both springs and all cables.)

Here's a pic of the bracket you need, this is from a blower I parted out, the owner evidently didn't notice the two back bolts had fallen out alowing the driveshaft to wear into the bracket.

Still useable if you want it, stopped at the post office after work & it would be $11.65 to ship it to you.

I would have told you in our PM but couldn't upload a pic of it there, want you to see it to make sure you want it...

@mort looks like the guys have you covered , have to add the condition of that looks very good , no bends or hard impact on the auger is very good . recommend lubriplate , chain and cable lubricant for the auger chain drive , never let mine dry out . that hard sliding chute base , kids have any , roll up snow sliders ? , removed  chute ,magic marker drew a gasket that perfectly fit under chute , use , SUPER LUBE silicone spray , chute spins with ease , BTW  my  brass chute guides do move with it , not sloppy loose , just enough. also use the 1/8 " stainless cable for the chute rotation . use wire terminal ends to bolt to chute pull holes. as I  set up mine , I lubricated as I  went , making everything work easier . good luck with it , pete
