moe1965 738 #1 Posted May 28, 2022 Just about finished with my rebuild. Just wondering what is recommended for a break in run time if any at all. Thanks it's been a fun project so far I rebuilt a engine with my dad back around 1982 I was around the age of 14 ish. He passed away last year at the age of 94. I found all his tools like ring compressors and books etc that we used. Brings back lots of memories for me I guess this is why Im doing this project 4
peter lena 8,625 #2 Posted May 28, 2022 @moe1965 using rotella # 30 wt as your oil ? very good on those engines , personally would run it regularly , till it starts to discolor , then a hot flush oil change , to enhance drainage . been using , rislone zinc additive to my oils couple of years now , instructions on back of bottle , my engines run with a definite ease of function , just an idea. pete
SPINJIM 1,981 #3 Posted May 28, 2022 I've read somewhere that you should run the first few hours with multi-weight dinosaur oil (maybe with a little Marvel Mystery Oil), then drain it and refill with a good multi-weight oil like Rotella, Mobil 1, or Castrol synthetic blend with the afore mentioned Zinc additive. I also shoot a little oil into the cylinder on first start up, and use 'assembly oil' during the rebuild. I think the main goal should be a few oil changes during the first year of break-in (depending on how much it's used).

If so, when you get it running again I'd be interested in your observations of whether or not you feel more vibration. 1 hour ago, SPINJIM said: first few hours with multi-weight dinosaur oil Agree with that... you want SOME wear to occur in the first few hours so that the rings seat properly. After that, Rotella T1 straight 30 with 1 oz / qt of ZDDP. 1 hour ago, SPINJIM said: use 'assembly oil' during the rebuild
moe1965 738 #5 Posted May 28, 2022 Yes I did remove balance gears and will give feed back as soon as I get her up and running. Probably by Monday. It's a 12 hp I'm rebuilding

I was going to mention a machine shop I knew about... but Nevamind... I just read that the machine shop that my neighbor told me about does not service tractor engines... Some of the Amish in my area will do rebuilds on small engines. You probably have some Amish in Indiana who might work on them.

moe1965 738 #11 Posted May 29, 2022 Started up the rebuild engine today didn't notice any difference leaving the Ballance gears out I was very sceptical on doing so but after all the research I did it was a 95 5 percent choice ,95 percent leaving them out. Engine has a little flutter in it very speratic. carb adjustment I'm sure.. will tweak it later. Thanks for all the help on this journey for me I have more confidence now if a nother project like this comes along.
