Metal oil seal replacement? - brake shaft seal

Hey folks so what's the trick to removing the oil seal on the brake shaft that is metal on the outside of the seal?  Seems like you would have drill into it but that doesn't sound like a great idea with shavings, etc.  So wanted to check with the experts before attempting anything.

 

For reference this is a 74 C-100 8 speed.

You can carefully drill a small  hole then insert a sheet metal screw. Use vise grips to grab the sheet metal screw.

 

I've tried that and had mediocre success with it.

 

I have better success with a somewhat barbaric method of basically crushing the seal Pat and angle until it will spin on the shaft and then removing it with a screwdriver.

If you are concerned about shavings, punch a hole with a sharp center punch that has more taper than most, think ice pick.

@OutdoorEnvy  how about a PACKING PULLER , as the puller and a needle punch for the hole ? pete

It will be the same process...no drill needed.  You want something small enough to get in between the metal of the seal and the shaft...something like this.  This is a Carter Pin Puller.  An ice pick with a bent point will also work.  Pry and pull out.

Thanks for the help all!  It's out.  Hammered in a pick tool then used one similar to what @stevasaurus suggested to pry it out.

@Handy Don  many years servicing  tank drive " stuffing boxes " at tank change over time , always used those packing pullers , when I  first encountered w/h axel seals , it was a no brainer , like it was made for it .  a fine pin punch just a tiny hole ,  screw  in the  puller , you are solid for a mechanical pull . easy , pete

OK - seems that the removal process is well covered - REASSEMBLY - the seal needs to be square to the bore prior to insertion. I have had good sucess using the brake drum WITHOUT the woodruff key as a flat driving surface. Put cellophane tape over the empty keyway on the shaft to prevent damaging the seal and apply a spray or liquid lube to the shaft & seal - work it onto the shaft past it - remove the tape, use the drum as a driver, along with a deep socket to fit over the shaft - easy does it - tap it home.

If I recall correctly, the brake shaft seal is the easiest of the brake shaft seal and the transmission input shaft seal…

if you are gonna replace the transmission input shaft seal, it is a booger of a little thing.

I trashed 2 before I took some advice on here and flipped it around backwards.

When I did that, I had a little better results. It still did not go in perfect, but it will do. I also put some RTV sealant around the hole, and that helped too. 
The thing was the metal kept getting caught on the housing…
