414-8 Front Spindles

Recommended Posts

WH1987

I have two 414-8 Wheel Horse Tractors. Both have HD reinforced spindles. I am looking for this type of spindle which the length is 5-1/4 long

as opposed to a regular spindle is 4-1/4 long. Does anyone know where I can get these spindles ?

Welcome! I'll throw this out there - IF you cannot find those, consider doing the trailer stub axle modification with tapered roller bearings. Numerous folks here have done this, mostly for FEL applications, I believe @ebinmaine has already done this on his "ongoing" Colossus project. Just ask ...

I was going to go that way with Colossus project, yes. But I went even bigger on that and had somebody make some custom spindles up for me.

I do however still have the pieces I was going to use on that and they're going to end up on my 1974 c160 at least for the summer.

Why are you looking for spindles? Do you have a worn one? A broken one?

My LH spindle is bent.

Yes, welcome!

I'm not sure what you are seeking exists. The longer spindles I've seen were 1" diameter on swept axle 520-H models and were set up for tapered wheel bearings. The HD spindles like the ones you have are the heaviest and longest ¾" axles I've seen.

Edit:

Re-reading, I'm not sure I understood your "length" dimension. Is that the dimension through the wheel or through the axle?

Yep. I'm sure others will chip in, but those are the strongest and longest ¾" spindles I've seen. Are you trying to simply replace the bent one or get longer ones?

I would like to replace if I can find one. Otherwise I will try and repair this one.

I have two machines with these spindles. Both are 414-8 machines.

Ah, my apologies at confusing myself and trying to confuse you.

I would put a post in the Classified/Wanted section you'll find at the top of the page.

Include the picture and specify the axle diameter and wheel side length for what you need

If someone needs more info they'll post or PM you. Please DO NOT put your phone number or other personal info in your post--rely on PMs via the Forum.

I will try that later. I actually found the correct TORO p/n but it is no longer available. The assembly diagram shows the correct HD spindle.

p/n 107651 for LH and p/n 107650 for RH. I will try and locate one but may have to repair the one I have. Thank you for your help.

For what it's worth - judging by the severity of the damage to the spindle - you probably have other problems related to that. Bent rim, destroyed outer bearing, bent tie rod, on and on. What exactly happened?? Got a Honda 4313 Rider years ago where the PO missed the cup holder and pegged a tree. All the above as described...

I'm curious what happened to bend it like that. My loader tractor that has been worked to it's limits and beyond has those spindles on it and never bent one.

Interesting story but I do not drink while operating machinery. I have had this machine for 20 years and have not hit anything to do that. The RH spindle sheared at that joint about 5 years ago and I had it repaired. The LH is currently bent so before it shears I will repair it. My guess is seeing it is on the same machine it is a manufacturing issue which caused fatigue in the 90 degree bend. I have another 414-8 with a loader and so far no problem.

That is interesting !

Bending metal can cause fatigue as I was going to suggest just bending it back may result in the same problem. Wonder if the factory had to bend them after they were originally made????

hello WH1987,   back in the day (15-20 years ago) the kit that wh sold had the two gusseted HD 3/4 inch spindles and two HD wheels.  the wheels had a larger hub which held a larger bearing. similar to the standard 3/4 inch ID bearing only bigger OD. I bought the last kit my dealer had.  the kit was $200. back then.  hopefully someone has an extra. best of luck and welcome to redsquare

mike in mass.
