Ifixoldjunk 778 #1 Posted May 8, 2022 So I ended up getting this free flood damaged stihl MS251C. Got it running for free, and then tossed a leftover 14in bar one it. my question is, seeing that this saw was sold with a 18in bar, is it safe going down in size? Will it spin the chain to fast? 8ntruck 7,256 #2 Posted May 8, 2022 It won't take as much power to cut with the 14" blade as it will with the 18" blade. The only time that will make a difference is when the full length of the bar is in the cut. In effect, the shorter bar will be like cutting a smaller diameter limb with the 18" bar. If you think it is going too fast, back off on the throttle. With enough power to pull an 18" blade behind it, the 14" blade should really eat through a log quickly.

The only thing that will change the chain speed is a size change of the engine (clutch) sprocket.
