Axle snap ring groove and snap ring size

@stevasaurus and anyone that may have done this before - there is a current post labeled "What keeps the axles in place", regarding an 8 speed axle where the spline snap ring failed for some reason.

Questions - it appears to be a "standard" external snap ring used originally - if so, has anyone machined the groove wider and deeper to accept a "heavy duty" version? Also, has anyone successfully used the wound spiral type that has about 2-1/2 turns and no end gap when installed??

I don't know about the coil thingy, but you surly could either clean the existing groove or widen it a little. In the round hoods, a 1/4" hole was drilled where the groove is now, and a roll pin was inserted.  I don't think anybody ever had one of those axles pulled out.  :occasion-xmas:

Yipper - McMaster has both standard and HD - under "Retaining Rings"

And sometimes a total PIA to remove if you do not have good access to the end - not a problem here.

Yup - just got done going thru a 502 Unidrive - that pin was pretty much bullet proof. BUT, having been in the Automotive Business as a Mfg. Engineer for a Tier 1 OEM supplier, I know all too well that over time, EVERY component is scrutinized as a potential Cost Reduction candidate (how I so dislike those words...). Probably proved to be cheaper to cut the groove when blanking out the shaft rather a separate setup to cross drill the hole ... the pin and ring were probably close to a wash.

Yep. And those *%$@# words apply to software development too. "What features can we leave out or charge extra for?" and "We can put that it but it'll need three more weeks of development and add 35 hours to the quality testing cycle."

You sometimes find them securing the rubber boots on ball joints, (track rod ends).

McMaster Carr shows these heavy duty spiral rings using the same width groove as a standard snap ring of the same dia.

Wheel Horse used the spiral lock rings on D series Manual PTOs  Some of the older elecrtic PTOs used them as well...

Do not go deeper, the snap ring needs to be under a bit of tension to keep it in place. The splines are hardened steel and not a consistent surface so I would expect you would break a lot of cutting tools.

@953 nut Good to know. Yes, interrupted cuts take their toll on lathe bits, was planning to use HSS, as carbide does not tolerate impact force at all.

Yes, the clip needs to be sprung open by the shaft - easy to tell if it or is not.
