TC10284 111 #1 Posted May 5, 2022 (edited) 21-12K805 312-8 with Kohler Magnum M12. There is something in the muffler because I can hit the bottom of the muffler with my hand and hear something inside bouncing. When at WOT, sometimes whatever is in there, partially blocks the exhaust, because I can hear the engine sound like it gets under extra load, and the exhaust sounds different. Like more "windy" sounding. I can drop the throttle briefly and I can return to proper WOT, until I hit a bump or hill that causes whatever it is to cover the exhaust hole again. Is there any easy way to get whatever it is out? Edited May 5, 2022 by TC10284
gwest_ca-(File Mod) 11,041 #2 Posted May 6, 2022 The tube going into the muffler has many small holes in it with a solid cap on the end. The metal between the small holes burns away and the end of the tube and cap falls off. This now loose piece can cover the hole in the next muffler baffle and that is what restricts the exhaust. Shut the engine down and the restriction falls away from the hole until the next bump that relocates the obstruction to the baffle hole again. Exhaust pressure holds it there. The metal shell of the muffler is so thin next to impossible to repair. A magnet on the bottom of the muffler may hold the loose piece on the inside. Have never tried it.
wallfish 16,999 #3 Posted May 6, 2022 (edited) But the ends of the muffler are crimped kind of like a soup can. You can open them up by grinding the edge of the end. That metal is thick enough to weld the removed cap back on. The actual type of muffler wasn't mentioned but I'm assuming it's the original type Edited May 6, 2022 by wallfish
TC10284 111 #4 Posted May 6, 2022 (edited) I have a super strong magnet that came out of an old hard drive that I might try. My other question then, is there a chance that piece would ever blow out of the muffler, from being heated very hot and banged around in it? Such as from normal use. I may as well just try to find a replacement. I've always wanted to try a stack... Edited May 6, 2022 by TC10284
ri702bill 8,319 #5 Posted May 6, 2022 Magnets loose some (or most) of their pull when heated - that too may be a problem...
pacer 3,169 #6 Posted May 6, 2022 Dont know your particular muffler, but over the yrs I have opened up several and find that the insides are just not worth the effort to try and repair! And, yes, a stack -- or many other types could be added. The stacks are relatively east to install what with the pipe type fittings.... I use this one (cub cadet) on just about every thing.....

It's the original, stock muffler. Do you happen to have a link or model number for this guy? Did you have to do any modifications to get it to fit? pacer 3,169 #8 Posted May 6, 2022 Just go to the bay and enter 'cub cadet muffler' there are ...... LOTS of them, find a low price on one, I just was looking and like every thing else thay have bumped the prices up - I had been paying around $30. Going way down the listings I did see a few for around $40, with many running $50 and up. You should be able to utilize common pipe fittings to reach over to the stack,

I had an original muffler from an M14 that is not on a tractor and that got me back in operation for now. Gwest_ca was right essentially. When I looked at the muffler, the metal between where the tube goes into the muffler has broken loose and it is loose inside the muffler. I"m not sure if I can remove it or not. I don't think I can.
