Cool!   I don't get over to Columbus very often, but occasionally.   It's about an hour and 15 minutes from me.  I go to Louisville periodically for work, and it's not much longer going that way than down through Paoli on the back roads.

congrats on the Eaton 1100. that's industrial strength right there, bulletproof so long as you keep it cool i've heard. i never had one but i think the hydraulic lift is that short lever on the left hand side of the dash? you might be able to trace hydraulic lines to it- you'll know for sure once you get it running.

my goodness sorry for the double posts... not my day sheesh. i watched the video. the honda sounds STRONG! my key switch is getting flaky. i have to jiggle it to kill the engine sometimes.

Yep,  I see that handle now.  Didn't see it while the tractor was running. Next time I fire it up I'll see if that works.  No deck on it now but I can watch the arm underneath.

Mixed luck with the "new" decks.  Both are 48" cut.  Oddly, the best of the 2 was on the 416-8 that doesn't look like it has run in 10-15 years (or more).  

 

I thought I'd sharpen the blades on the better deck because they were pretty dull. Took them off and found that one spindle was missing the washer under the blade, and the blade has been slopping around and wore into the shaft on the spindle. 

 

 

 

Luckily I have another old 42" deck that I think is beyond being worth repairing (at least in my case with all these decks) so I'm going to pull a spindle off that when I get time. This nicer 48" deck is going to be worth a full refurb I think.

The Honda sounds just fine and a bit quieter than the Onan, IMHO. Oughta be a lot of fun.

I already have the 16hp Onan, but really haven't run it much so I don't have any comparison other than the single cylinder 12hp Kohler.  I guess when it comes down to it, for my needs I don't care as much about fuel economy as other things.  I don't *want* to burn more gas but if I'm running a gasoline engine, I will be.  A bit more?  ... ah well...    If somebody wants to give me the parts, I'll gladly convert to electric. 

 

BTW, that was another thing I picked up from the guy I got the tractors from.  He had about 15 electric motors - I bought the two that looked best to me, but not the biggest...   I can use them for testing, or maybe I can run my WH around with a really long extension cord attached?   

 

Hah! -  I just had an image come to me of putting the 110v electric motor on a tractor, and pulling a trailer with a generator to power the motor!

Well, rich is better than lean. But... in my opinion, you would see various signs of that later on in your rebuild if it was rich. I don't think those have an adjustable carb anyway... if memory serves me correctly...

Oh yeah, I have seen some of what @Evguy has done - very impressive!  And I'm guessing, quite expensive, unless you are already involved in EV stuff and have parts on hand.  It would be fun, but I don't have a budget for hardware unless maybe I trade off some of the stuff I just picked up.

I don't think that Honda will burn more fuel than your Onan. Probably more than the K301, but nowhere as bad as an Onan.

The Honda is an OHV engine so much more fuel efficient for its power output and runs cleaner to boot.

 Going electric can get pricey, especially the batteries. Congratulations on your purchase, my doner gt1848 with blown engine was more than 200, you did well.

i have this exact same problem on a 42" SD deck, where the base of the spindle shaft is wallowed out and the threads are gone. i thought about trying to weld/grind to build it back up but i'm not sure i can be precise enough. i might try some Steel Stik putty and a wet finger to sculpt it smooth though

That sounds like it might be a workable approach.  Although, it seems like a less desirable approach than either replacing the spindle with a "known good" used spindle, or a new one.  Haven't priced the new ones lately but I'm thinking it's around $100 for a new set of 3.  I'd rather not spend that now, when I have usable ones around.

 

That said,  can someone please give some pointers on removing old deck spindles?  I've gone over the manuals, and it's not 100% clear to me.

 

Once the blade nut and blade are removed, and the nut on top of the pulley is removed, do you need to use a puller to remove the pulley?  Or are you supposed to immobilize the pulley and turn the nut that was under the blade? I'm not sure if I'm just dealing with rust here, but these things seem to be nearly impossible to remove (well, impossible so far...).  (Obviously you need to remove the 4 bolts holding the actual spindle body to the deck, but that doesn't help with the pulley still on it.)

I've only done this once. I used a puller on the pulley after leaving it soaking in penetrant for a couple of weeks (I had actually put it aside and forgot about it for most of that time).

Yeah that's it.

I do actually have three or four decks here. I know at least one of them will cut and function.

Fact is, our little hillside terrain acreage here doesn't have any place broad or flat enough that a writing style mowing utensil would be very useful. 

We have a push mower. We still go with old machinery though being in possession of a 20 or 30 year old Snapper push mower.

I have a self propelled walking mower... although... it is only used on 1 place on the property (behind the dam of the pond).

 

Problem is... half the time... it doesn't work... so I am propelling it back to the shop for repairs. Plastic carb, el-cheapo engine... etc.
