@davem1111 you can see my thread titled

“48 inch SD Deck Restoration “ and can probably get most of your questions answered there…

But keep on here and keep asking questions, we are glad to help.

I know it was impossible for me to remove my pulleys from the spindle shafts without  wrecking either a pulley or a shaft… I chose to get all new spindle assemblies, and pulleys. I wanted the deck to last another 30 years…

Thanks @Snoopy11… it is not perfect but it is better than it was already, and I’m not finished yet.

Next I will be gathering up carriage bolts, and other hardware to prepare for reassembly.

BTW… anybody here know if the deck belt and the PTO / drive belt for the 48 inch (1994) SD decks are the same width ?

I was looking at the new center/ double pulley and it looks like the pulley grooves are different widths…

I don't think so. The PTO belt is usually a 5/8 belt.

The PTO to deck belt is a 103" x 1/2" belt.  Deck belt for the 48" deck is a 107" x 1/2" belt.  I get mine at TSC.

Interesting. On all my PTO to deck applications, I use 5/8... which fits perfectly into the PTO to deck Pulleys.

Now, on the deck belt, I use 1/2...

Hmm... perhaps I am doing something wrong...?

That sounds like it might be a workable approach.  Although, it seems like a less desirable approach than either replacing the spindle with a "known good" used spindle, or a new one.  Haven't priced the new ones lately but I'm thinking it's around $100 for a new set of 3.  I'd rather not spend that now, when I have usable ones around.

Last i checked complete new spindles were around $150 each! So those ones you have laying around are pure gold. If ever i have a howling spindle i'm going to try just replacing the bearings cuz $450 on a set of 3 new spindles is a total no-go for me.

That said,  can someone please give some pointers on removing old deck spindles?  I've gone over the manuals, and it's not 100% clear to me.

Once the blade nut and blade are removed, and the nut on top of the pulley is removed, do you need to use a puller to remove the pulley?  Or are you supposed to immobilize the pulley and turn the nut that was under the blade? I'm not sure if I'm just dealing with rust here, but these things seem to be nearly impossible to remove (well, impossible so far...).  (Obviously you need to remove the 4 bolts holding the actual spindle body to the deck, but that doesn't help with the pulley still on it.)

Maybe @daveoman1966 has some ideas?

We used to have a bunch too. If you have a small apple or peach tree, or flowerbed that you're tired of, they will reduce it to nothing in an amazingly short amount of time. :ranting:

One thing they will do- if you have briars and heavy underbrush in a wooded section of your yard: tie ONE goat out there for 2 hours. They will eat every bit of it. Poison Ivy? No problem. I have no clue how they do it, but they won't leave anything.

Just wanted to update on the purchase and what I've done so far.   The GT-1848 with the Honda GX610 ran pretty good but was fluctuating in rpms pretty wildly at lower throttle.  I pulled the fuel line, re-routed it to make it about a foot shorter, and put a new filter inline. Lubed the throttle and choke cables. With the air filter off she purrs now, and that filter is pretty nasty - new one should be here tomorrow.  Going to try running it again with the old air filter to see if maybe that was the major problem.

In the meantime, I will need to do some work on the steering, not sure what's broken in there but it's jumping teeth.  Want to clean it up but won't have time for about a month.

The 416-8 I bought in this deal is siezed, as far as I can tell quickly. Not sure what I'll be doing with that.

Working on refurbishing one of the two 48" decks, but I need some parts (spindle shaft and a couple of pulleys).  Got the major parts repainted while I'm waiting. That's a few weeks down the road also.

I'll probably be selling some parts later this summer, most likely starting with the stuff I can ship easily.  I also have a lead on a parts tractor that is basically a frame with an Eaton 1100 trans, steering, front axle and wheels, and rear wheels, for maybe around $100.  Might be worth it, maybe better if I can get it for $50. B)

When you get a minute or six, pop the head off and the engine tins and see why it's seized. Not overly likely but it is legitimately possible it's an easy fix. Could be something ridiculous like a mouse nest. I've actually had it happen to me.

You'll have no problem at all parting that one out if that's the way you decide to go. If you were closer I'd be after those rear wheels and tires. That 8-speed transmission has some value too.

Do you know what series that is? What front axle it has? If that's a 520 with a forward sweep the front axle and steering is worth three times the asking price.

I hope to have time to poke at the Kohler 16 later in June - going to be traveling a bit so tinker time will be a bit tight.

This parts tractor is on CL in Southern IN near Louisville KY, listed for $120 but I am betting I can get him down to $100 or less pretty easily.  Yeah, even if the hydro is shot there's easily more parts value here than that.

I've already been in contact with the guy - he said it's part of an estate sale for his dad and he doesn't know any more about it but will be looking tomorrow to see if he can get a model number or S/N.  Obviously that only works if it's on the frame or rear fender - isn't that where most of them are found?

See if you can tell from this picture:

@horsenewbee, looks very good , hope you do those spindle bearings over , with lucas  x-tra  heavy duty chassis grease . takes the worry out of what kind of grease is in there . polyurea rated , 560 drop point , anti sling , also do the mule drive bearings , smooth solid quiet running .  did that on my 3 horses , no whining bearing noise , no failures , pete

I'm not familiar enough with the later models to say what that might be.  Like you say, the 100 bucks will easily be returned.

Model and serial number are probably on the tag on the front edge of the fender, right in front of where the seat would be, but good luck being able to read it still.

We need a crossing fingers emoji. :)

Well, I'll be darned, found it, right smack in front of my eyes.  Thank you sir!

I'm going to use it now, just so it shows up in my "Recently Used" list. :handgestures-fingerscrossed:

@ebinmaine  I just noticed my "handgestures-fingerscrossed" emoji is different than yours.  I got mine from the "Default" list here on RedSquare, where did you get yours?
