Thanks!   Packing my tools, tie-downs, ramps, etc. now.  My wife thinks it's cute how excited I am to be bringing these home, but she is also fully supportive of my somewhat new addiction  ...er.... hobby. 

 

I appreciate the kind words and thoughts for the seller and will be sure to pass them along.  Personally, I just had the prostate (among other things) bloodwork done a few weeks ago and I'm clear. Cholesterol a bit high, blood pressure looking not too bad....  but yeah, best not to ignore these things.

 

Hopefully I'll be sharing some pics by tomorrow afternoon, but it may be Wednesday.   Cheers!

Got me thinking about it.  There are some on the Member Map really close, but the guy's name is Curtis.  "Hoosier Dale" is probably only a few miles away.  I will certainly ask if Curtis knows about this forum.

It would be a shame to part out that hydro.  The GT 1800/1848 had the same gear ratios as the 520HC.  Very fast tractors.

Good point. I made the, hopefully incorrect, assumption that the seller's reaction was to an advanced case with a poor prognosis. In 2014, based on bloodwork, my GP insisted on a biopsy (not a fun procedure) that informed successful treatment. Probably wouldn't be typing this had I ignored his advice.

Well, parting out any of those tractors for... a 200$ purchase... isn't really advisable. BUT... if that is what Dave chooses to do, I'll back him. I just think he would be more happy to get everything working on them first, get them running, then decide if he wants to keep or part them out. No need to rush or anything like that.

Trailers are the way to go, cheap to rent and you can get the exact spec you need.

 

Picked this feed trailer up the other day on a tilting deck vehicle hauler. Was a 14 hour round trip, but by far the cheapest option. I think the trailer was £65 for the weekend, and we used about £350 in fuel.

 

You would have easily got 8 wheelhorses on that trailer

The guy, Curtis, said he's having a biopsy in a few days and is hopeful.  I told him he had people here who had him in their thoughts and prayers, and he smiled and said Thank You. Very nice guy.  He used to be a tool & die machinist, and had a whole metal working shop that he was starting to sell off.  I bought a few other things from him, but 1) didn't have much more room in the truck, 2) don't have that much room in my garage, and 3) my wife wants to see "downsizing", not "upsizing", at least in things that I will rarely or never use in the next few years.

First, it was not hard to get the tractors in the 10' box truck. I pulled the deck from the Work Horse, and pushed it up the ramps, then turned it sideways.  Slid the deck under it.  Then pushed the 416-8 up the ramps, and had about a foot to spare at the back.

I took a car battery and some starting fluid with me.  The 18 horse Honda engine fired rather nicely.  I think had there been gas in the tank I could have driven it into the trailer, but didn't bother.  I was actually worred about the seller having second thoughts if it ran that good....

 

They didn't post a picture of this side of the Work Horse, which is the most disturbing thing I found.  He said it had been retrofitted with this engine a few years ago, and I guess the muffler wouldn't fit so they cut into the hood:

I would have bought these in a heartbeat, and I've been downsizing for years. The 416 alone is worth more than you paid for it.

 

And don't sweat the Workhorse hood. Easily replaced, and the muffler can be relocated or replaced with something smaller than a diesel tractor trailer uses...

Oh yes, I did very well.  It was just a bit disheartening to see what someone did to this hood, but they did keep the tractor in service. Although sadly, proper maintenance could have possibly avoided at least some of the bad stuff here.

 

I'm thinking either dual stacks or a custom header into one stack would look good on this engine. Not much of a welder here so I don't think I'd attempt to make something like that myself, but we'll see. Funny (? ) - the engine moves a little when engaging the PTO, so I don't think it's mounted well either.

 

I may not have much time to mess with it till the weekend, but I think I'll see if I can feed it some clean gas and see how well it runs. 

 

I'm going to clean up the Ags from the 416 and put them on my "good" 416-8 as soon as I get the trans painted and re-installed on it.  Also the seat.  Both of these seats are in much better shape than the one I have on that one.  

 

On the 416 I just got, it looks like some of the wiring has been messed with and the engine looks a bit rough, so I'll need to check that one out before trying to run it.  Lower on the priority list at the moment...

 

All in all, I am pretty happy with my haul.

Looks like it might be a decent rattle can paint job from gray to red. The scratched parts are showing gray underneath.

As others have noted, the hood is not hard to replace, should you decide to re-locate the muffler. I fully agree that messed up and running is a LOT better than junked! If you get a minute, could you post a video of the Honda running? I'm interested in hearing if that muffler really tones it down compared to the Onan and Kohler twins.

Now that you have it all you can survey and plan your next steps, including selling off stuff you won't use.

Exactly - no need to rush on anything. 

I had a few minutes a while ago (catching up on work from yesterday...)  and I noticed the gray paint showing through also. Seems odd that someone would do that, but .... I've seen people do much odder things.  

Regarding the Honda engine, I might have a few minutes to put some gas in the tank or at least put an "IV" on it. I'm anxious to hear it run too.   BTW, the guy also had an oddball muffler which looks like it might actually fit this motor - he let me have it for a dollar .  I forgot to get the part number off of it.  I think it was an Ingersoll Rand brand. 

416 hood isn't cut but is bent up pretty badly.

First, on the engine:   I'm pretty sure this engine is a GX610, which doesn't appear to be sold "new" anymore unless there's some NOS out there. Very similar though.  I see a used one on eBay for $1200. 

 

Second, yeah, I'm unlikely to be trying for any show pieces. 

 

Third,  I asked the guy about the lift, since I've never had one with a hydraulic lift.  He said he only used the rear deck wheels, didn't even realize there was any other lift method. So far I don't even see a control for it.  Looking for the manuals but in the meantime, how does this lift work?  And I'm very happy to have an Eaton 1100, and it makes me want to put on a 3-point hitch and lots of other goodies. But I may not get that far - who knows.

Absolutely! Just let me know! Yours definitely looks fixable to me. I think it would turn out pretty swell.
