Hydro trans leaking oil

Recommended Posts

Was curious if anyone had a fix to oil leaking from the oil filter on a hydro? I put 10w-30 in it and a Napa filter that is the correct size, as well the previous filter was a wheel horse filter and it leaked a little as well.

could it be the viscosity of the oil? I put filter on hand tight, do I need to synch it down more?

If it leaked with the old filter and leaks with the new filter you either have an old gasket stuck to the transmission or a problem with where the filter mounts. I think the threaded part the filter mounts to comes out and there is an o-ring behind it that may be torn. Or there may be a crack somewhere. Hand tight should be enough.

10w-30 is the spec weight for the oil and is right. Far as tightening the filter. My hand tight is closer to wrench tight and I seen some that their hand tight is finger tight. Would not hurt to give it an 1/8 of a turn.

I will say I have not seen to many that I could take off by hand after they run a while.

If it is a newer machine using the Eaton 1100 Hydro it could be a fitting.

I had one that leaked from the inside tube connection fittings (#28) and it appears like the oil filter was leaking. The fittings have o-rings on the housing fitting side. Might suggest taking the tire off and checking that area.

I always go hand tight, then 3/4 turn more with a wrench.

And lubricate the rubber seal before installing.
