Hemlock "disc" preservation?

Recommended Posts

ebinmaine

Trina is going to make up some table top decorations from hemlock discs somewhere around 14 to 18 inches in diameter.

She'd like to have them stay fairly straight and experience minimal cracking.

Online reading, she finds a product called Anchor seal.

Any experience with it?

Other ideas thoughts comments questions suggestions opinions?

Thanks.

That and other wax based products are used by turners (lathe wood workers) to keep green wood from splitting while in storage. Anchorseal also comes in colors.

This site may give Trina som good ideas. https://blog.woodturnerscatalog.com/2012/09/storing-and-turning-unseasoned-wood/

End checks happen in logs because of uneven drying rates.  If your rounds are not very thick, they might air dry OK.

Bake them in a 300 degree oven for 24 hours?  Sorry - this one fell unfiltered out of the brainstorming section.

Interesting you'd bring that up.

She noticed on some (5"?) Round pieces of cottonwood that a 3/4" thick slice doesn't check.
