4hp Kohler k91 issues!

Recommended Posts

Husband wants some advice… lol.  So we did an engine swap today on two suburbans because we could not get the one engine to spark all the time to get it running!  The engine ran last year before parking for the winter sleep…. Points were changed out for new the engine was cleaned to make good contact has new spark plug new coil condenser we even switched out the fly wheel today thinking maybe the magnet was weak…. Advice???   It would where are you out yanking on the recoil five or so times and maybe only get the points to fire twice if you’re lucky..  checked the gap and pull again… same thing over and over!  Thanks in advance!

Have you checked timing on them? On K91s and I have quite a few of them, unless they are battery ignition, I change them to the NovaII electronic ignition. It eliminates points and condenser and automatically sets timing. It’s cheap and fast to install making engine always have good spark.

Points setting on the K91s can be a pain. Seems some need to be at the exact right spot while others have some tolerance to work with. Start at .016 (or even tighter)pull and check for spark then open them up just a .001 each time until you find the sweet spot.

I've never tried the electronic ignition like Cas but I understand why he would just swap to it

I bought 2 of them for Briggs engines, 1 never worked, even tried it on another engine and no luck.  The other nova worked for about month, then stopped.

I hear alot of mixed reviews about them

I bought these off Amazon. The vendor was “The ROPS Shop”. That vendor is also on Ebay

No battery needed. Unit simply replaces condenser and points. It uses the energy from magneto. Can be bought at Amazon. It’s called the NOVA II electronic ignition. There are cheaper knockoffs out there looking identical . Stick to the original which is the only one that  has the logo cast onto body.

I also had some trouble with them, but it was always with the "knockoffs". The real NOVA II has the logo cast onto body and I never had one fail or not work. I currently have six in use for quite sometime. All K91s which reside outside and are prone to point oxidation now have them. It will not work on flywheels with multiple magnets.

This type is the problem unit

Electronic Transistorized Ignition Module Nova

This is the one that is reliable!!!

clueless

Like many things, location and availability is a big factor in the price. Good running $250-$375.

I’ve got a 520xi with a ch20 kohler. It has 982 hours. It runs fine, but after seeing this valve train kit on eBay, I was wondering if there is any harm or need to throw one in it. Any one have insight into this?

I had a fire in 2019 which destroyed my pole barns and some wheel horse tractors and parts. i'm looking for someone who can use the engine that went thru the fire. It is not pristine but there must be some usable parts
please call George at 517-499-5678 for more info.
