Anyone Have or Build a Tall Tree Pump Sprayer

Recommended Posts

oliver2-44

I need a pump sprayer to spray my two 30 ft tall pecan trees.  Last year my Pecann crop was ruined by black aphids and tiny green stink bugs  I have a Tractor Supply 25 gallon electric sprayer I use for spraying small mesquite at the farm, but it won't reach high enough or put out enough volume to  cover a big tree.

https://www.tractorsupply.com/tsc/product/fimco-25-gal-deluxe-spot-sprayer-5302938-1350428?store=561&cid=Shopping-Google-Organic_Feed-Product-1350428&cid=Shopping-Google-LOB-Local_Feed&utm_medium=Google&utm_source=Shopping&utm_campaign=LOB&utm_content=Local_Feed&gclid=Cj0KCQjw6pOTBhCTARIsAHF23fKeN6hiYqVX_oRo7DDz3XMOeejd6M3a_14k3fnxKG36MX-hmgUfT4waAid5EALw_wcB

I've looked at replacing the pump but haven't really found or figured out what I need pressure/flow wise.  To spray 30 ft high I will need a minimum of 60 psi plus a little more for system losses, so I probable need a pump that will do 75-100 psi.  then there is the GPM flow question.

Back when i was in high School  (1970's) years ago we had a green double roller pump that mounted on the tractor PTO.  I wish I knew what it was, it would really put out some volume and that want would hoot it high.

My options seam to be find a higher pressure and higher volume 12v electric pump. or,  I could always mount a belt driven pump of the PTO on the front of a Wheelhorse and put my existing tank or a plastic barrel in a trailer behind it.

Anyone have experience or knowledge with spray pumps and spray wands setups, factory or shop built.

Thanks in advance.

Could you run a 540 PTO pump off a larger tractor?  Is a :wh: the perfect footprint for between the trees?

My larger 45hp 10,000 lb  tractor is at the farm 2 hours from here. So I’m hoping to do this wit a WH or 12v or 120v electric. A 12-16 hp Kohler should have plenty of power

Get the 540 PTO kit  (8-3211) for your WH and use the roller pump from your big tractor

I imagine a 30’ wand on a 500 lb. machine would be fun in a wind storm!

I am having a similar problem with a big maple tree.  I have a northern hydraulic system similar to the one you showed.  It has max pressure rated at 200 lbs 2.0 GPM only shoots about 30 ft high.  Pressure gauge will work up to just under 200 nozzle off but even with smallest orifice they provided it drops to about 60  (manual claims it should hold 110 withe small orifice...)

Regrettable that roller pump died many years ago spraying fence lines. I believe it may have dated back to the earl 50’s when my dad had the Dairy and used it to spray the dairy cattle.

Hypro still sells roller pumps. I have one set up on my sprayer so it connects to my 310-8. I run it about 1/2 throttle with a 7-ish inch pulley. Hooks up like the tiller idler setup.

I don't know what the GPM on my setup is, but it makes about 125 psi. My tank is 27 gallons, and with the arms folded out and all nozzles spraying, it goes in about an hour, maybe less. My tank has a bypass on it, so I can't even make a decent guess. Mine is a Hypro silver (stainless) 4 roller pump. The 6 and 8 rollers are likely higher GPM.

I made a bracket so my pump mounts in the belly hitch, and the weight of the pump holds belt tension. It works very well, though I don't run the tractor over 1/2 throttle.

I'm still needing to rig up a sprayer.

I know you use the tank spray arms, but if you have a hand spray wand could you post a picture of it?

On your pump mount, what do you connect the other end of the spring to?

Thanks for your assistance.

I'd also appreciate any comments from someone that has pump/sprayer design experience.

I have a 4 roller pump like shown at  Tractor Supply 7.2 gpm  150 max pressure , continuous operation 100 psi  2600 rpm  3/4" in and out

The 6 roller pump                               Tractor Supply  22 gpm   300 max pressure   continuous operation 150 psi  1200 rpm 3/4"  in and out

The 8 roller pump                               Tractor Supply  22 gpm   300 max  pressure   continuous operation 100 psi  1000 rpm 3/4"  in and out

To give you a general idea of the different pumps  I got mine some 30 years ago.  I could get 90 psi with an old 3/4 HP Briggs washing machine engine,

I used a valve to dump some back into the tank to control the pressure. When you store the pump get all the water out and fill with oil.

I don't have the experience, but if you have the large supply tank and a pressure washer, could the tank feed that? Those things shoot 30 ft.

Most can also draw "soap" but using that to draw pesticide instead of mixing it in the tank will allow it to be flushed afterwards.

Just kinda think'n out loud again

I’ve toyed with that idea. One of the challenges is I can’t find any info on how much they draw. I need to get the fungicide mixture relatively close. I’ve read too much can burn the trees leaves and of coarse to little doesn’t get results.

Maybe it could be measured in real time with the exact equipment and conditions. Run 5 measured gallons of water from the supply tank with a measured 1 qt of water in the pick up supply and the math would give a mix ratio for the pesticide. :twocents-02cents:
