Just got a Wheel Horse from my Grandpa

Hello,

 

I got a Wheel Horse from my granpda for my younger son. Just wondering if i could get some information regarding this tractor. The serial tag says the serial number is 32259. The engine tag states H55A-1170 then underneath that is 9057091. When looking up these numbers on the model list and what not. It doesn't really pin point down what model I have. I have pictures that i can provide if that would help someone help me.

Picture would be great. Some of us can ID a tractor just from pictures. If you have a picture of the ID tag on the tractor we can make a positive ID.

Just taking a guess - that is a 5.5 HP Tecumseh (maybe Lauson) - pictures would help ...

A 1960 suburban used a Tecumseh H55B-1170 engine.

Here are the pictures of the tags. I don't have a great picture of the whole wheel horse since I'm at work currently but I can certainly get more tonight. All the electrical on the wheel horse has been taken a part and has a electric start that I would like to get going again along with a new carb/ air filter. It runs just not great.

My Grandpa is turning 90 this year and we have always attended a thrasher show with him that I have been going to with him for the last 20 some years. My goal is to get this wheel horse worthy of the tractor parade to ride through with my son. I appreciate all the help so far.

The 1960 Suburban 400 would have had a pull start 4hp Kohler.

I believe it's the 5.5hp Tecumseh, It has the electric start and battery under the seat. Anyone have any idea on how the wiring goes for that bad boy?

Apparently they did not publish a wire diagram for the 550. Use the wire diagram for the 551. Click on the link below to down load the 401, 551, 701 manual. it has a wire diagram in it for the 551. ( Should be the same as your 550) Only thing that I did not see on the diagram is a switch to kill the engine.

Was your grandfather a Red Square member? The serial number was listed in the opening page of the owner manuals under Model 550. It is so cool to know that a fourth generation of your family will be showing some love to this famile heirloom. As has been said before there is a tendancy for the Suburband to do a wheel stand if you don't add a fair amount of weight to the front, safety first!

The throttle lever had a ground tab that made contact in the low speed position to shut it off according to the parts illustration.

Do not see a starter pushbutton.

 

The service bulletin on the ignition switches lists a 3656 3-terminal switch for the model 550 and 551. (There was also a 3656 1-terminal switch which got changed to 6890)

Do not see any switch listed in the parts list.

 

I added the 32259 serial number today.

First off, I want to thank the warm welcomes from everyone here and the great help! Here are some pictures regarding the electrical on my wheel horse along with a wiring diagram that was provided on here. Seems to me I have way more terminals on my key switch than listed in the wiring.

It looks like the switch was replaced with an Indak switch. You can still use the switch that you have. According to the diagram, you will only use the "B" terminal (Battery +) and the "S" terminal (Starter solenoid) 

 

If by chance that switch has a "M" terminal (magneto kill wire) and a "G" terminal (ground) you could also hook your ignition to shut off with the key.

Always interesting to see the changes previous owneres have made over the past half century. Any normally open spring return to open key switch can be used (they are used for gate operators and overhead doors.

I see the diodes are missing from the panel, too bad.

No not bad at all Richard did you miss this thread? I dug it up from the basement and was extremely helpful on my RE-67.

Lol....Come out the dumpster did they? For what I paid I felt sorry for the seller on fleabay. He musta been real hungry! 

Sorry..... last  Techy I am ever gonna revive lest Squonky pays me & he's on a fixed income ya know. 

Still you got them diodes I'll offer to rebuild them and we both can retire at 85.......
