Stihl 020 AVP help!

Recommended Posts

So as I said in another post I recently acquired a stihl 020 AVP. Now the issue here is I somehow got lucky enough to have a one off version (1971) of the saw with a 1/4 pitch chain. Now that means that the correct bar and chain setup for this saw is completely unobtainable. I’ve been thinking of finding a 3/8 sprocket for it but I wouldn’t know where to look. Does anyone have experience with older stihl saws? I’d love to get cutting with this saw.F778C3F3-CA60-4AF2-A652-7483B3F9BE8F.jpeg.ec82a7a72d3e7e17ac0c31bff8b7de6a.jpeg

I’d gladly just toss another chain another chain on it, but, this saw currently has a 18in bar for some unknown reason. It was only meant to use a 12in or a 14in. So for the sake of its tiny engine, I have no choice but to downsize it.

This sparked my interest enough that I did some interweb searching.  One of the things I found was that the 'P' in AVP stood for 'professional'.  Maybe this explains the 18" bar and odd pitch chain?  I also found out that Sthil dealers have little to no documentation on this model.

Have you dug around in the various chain saw forums?  There seem to be several to choose from.  Maybe you could find a Sthil dealer that dates back to the late 60's or early 70's?

Afraid I'm not much help here.  Half the fun is in the hunt.

I'd second that.

Maine has been a Commercial Logging area since the 1600s.

I've seen a few signatures on those forums indicating the folks are from here.

I do have a very good small engine repair shop I frequent. They don't go back that far but may be able to lead you in a direction.

@8ntruck Yeah, my dad works at a stihl dealership and he couldn’t find anything on this saw. It’s nowhere to be seen in any of the service manuals.

Runs amazingly though, so that’s a plus

@ebinmaine I’ll have to check out those forums. I know I had a account on one at one time, but I’ve probably forgotten the password😅

Best bet might be to just sharpen up that chain and go for it. Certainly would be a little peppier if it had a shorter bar but, use what you have.

@ebinmaine I could probably get one more sharpening out of the chain, but it’s pretty well used up. Few of the teeth are mangled too from hitting something at one time.

doesn’t bother me though. Part of the fun is hunting down parts and information from back in the day.

Absolutely.

I enjoyed that in years past when I sold auto parts for a living and I enjoy that nowadays looking for stuff for some of the tractors or projects that we are working on.
