BruceRoh 8 #1 Posted April 16, 2022 I have a 314-8 tractor. I think its a 1988 model? No toro on hood.tags were painted over. I have transmission oil dripping. It doesnt look as if it's leaking around the axles but seen there is oil out of the left side, looking at back to front of tractor, around break , clutch. looks like a seal maybe leaking? This, I'm going to call it pulley? right above axle. oil covered. Could use some help on this? Would really appreciate thoughts. Maybe a bearing an seal leaking? Thanks again, Bruce
stevasaurus 22,764 #2 Posted April 16, 2022 If you have 1 1/8" axles, you have the #110995 transmission. All that is on the left side is the brake drum and the axle hub. The seals for both of these can be replaced without opening the transmission. Remove the brake band and then the drum. Check for up & down and side to side play...if you have play you may have a worn bearing. If bearings are bad, then you need to open the trans to fix. Both seals can be dug out with an ice pick that has a 90 degree bend in the end. The seal is only 1/8" thick so do not dig in too deep. The brake shaft seal is SKF 7410...the axle seal is (for 1 1/8" axles) SKF 11050. Before installing, file or sand any burrs on the end of the shaft or axle and also the key ways. I usually tape the end of shaft and keyways and the slide the seal over the tape and use a good punch or plastic tube to tap in seal.
Ed Kennell 38,209 #3 Posted April 16, 2022 (edited) to the Bruce. It could very well be a leaking seal on the brake shaft. This is relatively easy to replace after removing the left wheel, the brake band, and the brake drum. But it is important to determine if the shaft bearing is OK. The shaft may have some small 1/16" axial movement in and out. This is OK. But if there is any noticable radial left to right or up and down movement, the bearing is probably worn and has caused the seal to fail. This requires a dissambly of the transmission to replace the bearing. Oops, Steve types faster than me......he is also our best transmission expert. Pay attention and follow Steves instructions.
