ri702bill 8,327 #3 Posted April 10, 2022 You CAN check the valve to tappet clearances - off the top of my head .007 for the intake and .017 for the exhaust. Refer to the manual - if they are close to that, as Squonk said... Pay attention to the exhaust clearance - they tend to close up a tad as they age - if there is NO clearance, you have to address that - the valve might be kept off the seat and cannot transfer its heat to the seat.... 3 Share this post Link to post Share on other sites
Handy Don 12,235 #4 Posted April 11, 2022 Agree--unless noticeably out of spec, best left alone. If you must remove a valve, it's done by compressing the spring and removing two tiny wedges (extremely easily lost and annoying to replace) from the bottom of the stem that secure the spring plate to the stem. Reverse to reinstall. To do the job safely, you must use a good valve spring compressor properly sized for the spring diameter (I use one of these) and have good eye protection and have excellent dexterity to get the wedges back in place when reinstalling. Grinding the end of the valve stem requires extreme care. At most you'd be removing only a couple thousandths of an inch (demanding a quality caliper to measure before and after) and the ground end has to be flat perpendicular to the shaft. Too much or crooked and the valve is ruined. 1 Share this post Link to post Share on other sites
