416-H value

Recommended Posts

WheelHorse520H

Hello, long time since I've been posting.

I am going to look at a '93 416-H tomorrow, and was wondering what y'all thought was a fair price. The nice gentleman is asking 700, claiming it runs and drives nice. Hour meter however is broken and stopped somewhere in the 300 hour range I believe. It has the Onan P216. Thoughts? I was also going to (with owner's permission, of course) test the hydro as described by @ebinmaine 's "new to the herd checklist", very helpful by the way. Thank you all for your input. Unfortunately I cannot get the photos uploaded because I have not become a supporter yet. Next step, that I keep forgetting.

Seems like you're starting in a fair price range.

Cleanliness is KEY.

HUGE help would be pics.

What implements are with it?

Any other general knowledge information about it you have?

From the pictures it's dirty but the paint is dark and solid and there is no rust in the photos.

42"sd 48"sd, neither of which interest me because I have a solid 48" sd, 48" plow/dozer blade which I have, not sure what size brinly plow, also no interest mostly because we don't have a farm/garden to use it for any more, rear mount grader, has my attention but not sure if brand or condition. I think that's all of them but when I asked about prices he said generally $200 per attachment.

No, we'll see what I find tomorrow.

The part to check on those is around the transmission.

Look in the tunnel and around the cooling fins. See if it's all bound up with grass.

You could really go two ways here.

Without pics it's tough to tell but you MAY be getting enough value at $700 with the implements ALONE.

Then the rest is automatically a win.

Sorry, $700 for the tractor and $200 for each attachment.

Oh oh oh.

I thought it was $700. For the whole package.

Tractor alone.....

We'd have to see pics.

Because of supporter status (or, more accurately, lack thereof) these are the only two photos I can post at this time. There are no photos on the ad of any attachments except what is on the tractorScreenshot_20220408-160622~2.png

IMHO:

IIFF the machine is in very good running condition

AND CLEAN.

THEN...

The prices are fair. Not the best bargain ever but fair.

The implements are valued accordingly.

If there are ANY condition issues.

I'd be lowering the price by negotiating or walking away altogether.

Grass clumped in tunnel or around Transmission.

Loose wires.

Obvious worn pivot points.

If the seller won't let you do the transmission strength pull test... Walk away.

One of the pictures I couldn't upload was wicked dusty, I was think about asking around $500, unless the wheel weights and tire chains are included. Then maybe $550-$600 He gave the okay to test the transmission last night. We'll see what I find. Thanks for your input.

Alright fellas,

It looks way better in person. And we were able to come to a very reasonable deal. $750 for a home-made rear weight rack and weights, two plastic wheel weights, and the well running, clean tractor. This thing started faster than my 520 and had no smoke or anything. I did forget my tow strap to tie it to a tree, but the gentleman said he really only used it for plowing his very short drive way, only with the really wet, heavy snow. Some of the transmission was a little dirty, but it was more mud and dust than grass clippings. I also by looking at it think the hour meter is not far off. All in all it seems well maintained from the time he got it (3 or 7 years ago, I forget what he said). There were some small wiring things that are definitely from someone else, and I asked him and he said that's how it was when he got it.

Thanks as always for all the help you guys give,

Andrew

I told him about that and he said there was no problem with me doing the test but I forgot my strap so I am going to do it today before I take it home. I was just wondering, (as well as the seller) how you figured this out because neither of us had heard of it before. I did a content search for "hydro test" and only got your new to the herd checklist and this thread that were relevant, so how did you figure this out?

It's been mentioned here on the site in the past.

I can't take any credit for it.

Drive the tractor around for a few minutes to get it hot and then do the test.

It shows you if the hydro unit is getting tired by warming up the drivetrain to operating temperature which changes clearances in the fluid circuits.

He said he used to push snow but lost traction and he has wheel weights, tire chains, and a weight rack. Would this be the same test? He showed me his two Ingersolls that were replacing the WH because they had bigger wheels.

Pretty similar really.

Lost traction?

So he's just not got enough weight.

My snow Horse is about 625, 650 lbs alone.

After I add all the fluid weight, steel weights, plow, me etc...

Well over 1300 lbs.

Like it says in the first post... I thought I'd seen a list but couldn't find after extensive searching.

Well maybe it just ain't there.....?

So I started a thread about that and the other folks contributed most of the knowledge.

My Trina and I organized it with the help of @stevasaurus and others.

The fact that you used it makes the time it took worthwhile.

I did the math with all the weights he had and it was about 850-950 pounds. So that makes sense.

So, this kind gentleman also gave me some manuals and a box of parts that "may or may not fit" and most of them are stickers from when he planned to restore another 416. Among the gold plastic hub caps for the front wheels, and the belts, there were two cans of the red Toro touch up paint. They feel pretty full too.

How heavy are the plastic wheel weights? They seem pretty beefy.

Paint cans

Weight

Tractor

Tractor unhooked

More photos to come soon...yes, including the awesome gold hubcaps.

The test is described in the Eaton 700 and 1100 manuals in the document section.

Here's one of them.

Thanks for posting that, I skimmed through some of it. Good stuff to keep around with those "just in case" manuals.
