Does anyone know how to remove that front gear after removing the nut?

You need to remove the other gear first. There is a snap ring that holds that on. After that remove the nut and you might need a small gear puller to get it off the shaft. You must time the shaft 90 degrees opposite of the other shaft so the blades don't hit.

...to avoid a rather noisy territorial dispute.. kind of like the WWI propeller fighter planes that had the forward facing machine gun firing thru the spinning propeller . all is fine until it isn't.

Handy Don

Two mower deck blades trying to occupy the same space at that same time? Uh oh.
