formariz 11,987 #1 Posted April 6, 2022 No particular reason or function. Just felt like making a Viking chair today. 12 8

EB-80/8inPA 1,641 #3 Posted April 6, 2022 My mother would have liked that chair; it can’t be tipped! Us kids tipping our chairs used to drive her nuts. 3

stevasaurus 22,724 #5 Posted April 6, 2022 That seat looks to low for an old guy with bad knees to get out of. Can you make it so the seat is about 16" to 17". It looks like it would be great for ice fishing if I could get up on my feet. Excellent Cas. 3

It’s made for sipping next to the campfire. Then once all “sipped out” one merely tips sideways onto floor and naps it out. 1

Just feed the fish some spent liquid courage and let Uncle Jim fry the pi$$ out of it! Cas, you are a craftsman hero. I hope all is well enough, where you are.
Yossarian 208 #8 Posted April 7, 2022 I love my Viking chairs, my wife and kids helped me build a set of four several years ago for Father's Day. Much more rudimentary and crude than that one, but very much appreciated. The design looks uncomfortable before sitting in it, but they really are not. I've found them more comfortable and less stressful on the joints than most modern lawn chairs. Some stain and three coats of spar urethane and they last longer too. 3
CCW 1,295 #9 Posted April 7, 2022 I have seen plans that use a 2x12. Your chair looks like a 1x12 (or wider). Does the thinner board work as well as the 2x?

Does the thinner board work as well as the 2x? 2x12 hardwood board would be ideal. I used what I have in stock a 1x12. It works just as well and it’s much lighter to carry them around assembled or not. It’s all about that wedge action where the two meet. These boards are actually a full 7/8” thick. The little woman came upon it and now is in love with it. Looks like I have to make another one. I was going to use this one in shop just to sit on it while I drink my coffee and think but now it was confiscated.
