Improving Brakes now thinking Independent Brakes

Brainstorming on this modification for a while.

Mocking up the pedals.

Wanting to keep a factory look and feel. So, I hesitantly cut up two good pedals (my 312-8 pedal and a 520H pedal)

Same here! I've many times wanted turning brakes and never quite figured out the best way to do it with what I have so far as parts

I have a girdle brace tied into the rear hitch assembly. Hopefully this will accurately locate and hold the backing plates for an expanding drum brake setup.

More pics to come as progress is made.

Seriously though... Dan, this is something that I have considered on one of my tractors. My only question is... what brake drums to use that have the same bolt pattern as WH?

I haven't found any either.

The drums that I'm going experiment with are a 4 bolt pattern. Which means that I will have to weld in most of the holes, and redrill.

No way out of it being a labor intensive project.

What I am thinking... is maybe an EZ-GO cart drum system... (Obviously with you fabbing all of the bracketry).

 

I have an EZ-Go with drum brakes on the rear... and can measure my 4 bolt cart pattern, if that helps?

 

Might be something to look into.

The Ford rims off of my Rangers actually are the same pattern as my 800. There is actually a guy on Youtube that used legit Ford wheels on his Wheel Horse...

 

I think that is actually a really interesting idea... regarding the drums... I wonder though... how easily you could lock up those wheels with those big ole' drums...

what about just one shoe instead of two, or turn the drum down and put a band around it?

The only thing I am missing from all of this is... aren't car brakes... hydraulic? How does all of that work? I know that the brakes on... say my cart... are cable style drums.

If the wheel cylinder were to be replaced by a cam on a lever, it could still activate the brake shoe.

Pretty much the design of a cart drum brake system.

 

What I like about the whole idea is that you are basically solving a 2-fold "problem" in my mind. Not only are you providing a better braking system... but it should widen the rear of the tractor several inches... which I like.

 

My only suggestion in doing anything like this... is to make sure you use heavy duty hardware... bolts and such. Better to go a little overboard... than have something come apart.

 

If we all got into a confession booth together... we all know that the braking system on our working tractors could use improvements. If I could get my tractors to stop better, 'specially when I am out working around the pond... bringing in dirt and rock... I would be absolutely thrilled!!!

Mike used a Ford brake DISC if I remember right. 

The type on a vehicle where the rear disc actually has a small built-in drum specifically for the emergency brake which is... CABLE operated.

I wonder if the disks/calipers now on downhill racing mountain bikes would be strong enough. They sure are compact. mechanical (or hydro-mechanical) and also have the option of putting the brake levers on the steering wheel!

Not sure how you'd handle attaching to the hub/axle, but here is what they look like:
