Improving Brakes now thinking Independent Brakes

I used Ford rotors with the outer disc cut off making it a drum. Then made band style brakes for it.

 

Ford Ranger of Jeep Cherokee would be about the same.

 

Also on my modified golf cart build I used a Ford Ranger rear axle with the small brake drums and WH rear wheels.

 

Nice looking build so far. I'm really diggin it @jeepdan.

They are VERY strong for the size. They come in 6, 7, and 8 inch rotors. Hydraulics can be single or dual piston. They typically use mineral oil.

 

Even though they have crazy stopping power, I doubt they are rugged enough for long-term abuse of these tractors. Just my $.02...

Not sure if I missed it or not.

Are you going to use E brake cable to operate the brakes or a cam lobe in place of the wheel cylinder.?

Or twin master cylinder for hydraulic?

It!s in the link I posted ion page 1   I got to about where the turn brakes started.

I had a super cub with manual disc turning brakes, didn't see much difference. 

It would allow slight adjusts for guiding the machine without turning the wheel.

The steering turning radius limited rear brake action for let r spin on a dime. If that is what you are going for?? 

Maybe a trike front end would allow it to turn like that. ???

Been working on brake linkages.

The left side I'm very happy with, especially with keeping the factory parking brake system.

Still haven't finalized what I'm going to do on the right yet. The drive belt is in the way to allow discrete routing of a rod.

The rod for the right pedal may end up on top of the floorboard, but at least it will be inwards close to the belt guard. Will have to fabricate a cover over it.

I think it would look fine even without a cover.

 

Just as a thought... what I wonder... is can you bend the rods to go under...? Is that possible? Would probably require heating the rods in the places that you want to bend.

Could be done with a cable. 

If I remember right, my 36"RD mower deck has bumpers that rest up against the underside of the floorboards. Need to investigate further.

Almost have the pedals finished up.

I think that the 3/8" rod passing over the foot board will be fine. Not going to make a cover for it at this time.

@ebinmaine there’s a lever that will likely rotate 100+ degrees inward that will unlock the brakes.  During normal use, they’ll slow together.  Unlocked, they are independent.  It mirrors many large tractor pedal designs.

Only one I've ever seen up close is my 1949 Ferguson. That has a pedal on each side of the tractor for independent usage.

Pretty sure that I can lean over and reach the lever with my fingers. My Kubota is set up the same way with the lever behind the pedals, and I can reach it fine from the seat.

Toe action? Not for me as I'm a below the knee amputee.
