Floyd Pink 44 #1 Posted April 5, 2022 Good morning, 1968 Raider 12. When I have it shifting with no gear grinding I have poor brakes. When I adjust it so I have good brakes I get the gear grinding. New brake shoe a few weeks ago. I understand that the brake adjustment has nothing to do with the clutch but if I adjust adjust the brakes according to the manual I have no pedal travel distance to be able to shift. I had it dialed in, with your help, for a while but I have worked the machine hauling firewood all winter. I love this tractor because of pulling power and I can't get it stuck since I put tire chains on the rear.
WHX?? 49,152 #2 Posted April 5, 2022 Sounds like you might be adjusting the brake a little tight. Check the brake band adjuster for spacers or extra washers between the nut and the band as sometimes they were put there by a PO to compensate for band wear. 9 minutes ago, Floyd Pink said: the brake adjustment has nothing to do with the clutch It does. If you have it adjusted too tight you will not have enough travel to disengage the clutch. Just for grins check the belt guard to make sure all the stop tabs are there and it is stopping the belt.

I had it adjusted perfectly and then I put a new brake shoe on. Ever since I can't find the correct adjustment. No spacers or washers. As for the tabs on the cover the inside did not have one or it was the few that got thru the assembly line without one. The paint had no marks where one was welded to it. I made one and welded it to the cover. The belt will stop unless the clutch /brake is adjusted to having a little brake.
edgro 677 #5 Posted April 5, 2022 My raider 14 has only one pedal for brake and clutch together, you may just have to find the sweet spot where both work
wallfish 17,079 #6 Posted April 5, 2022 The brake band should engage the drum right after the clutching releases the belt. Loosen the brake band nut all the way to the ends of those threads on the rod and see if you can effectively clutch for shifting. If it can shift without grinding gears you can now tighten that nut for some pedal adjustment but only as much as it will still clutch for shifting. If it still can't shift without grinding you may need a longer shaft link to the brake band for more adjustment Did you also change the belt at the same time as the brake band?
