New amp meter for c-141

Recommended Posts

stegs

My amp meter on my c-141 is still working, however the front glass and bezel ring that holds it in is broke

Im wondering, if anybody could tell me where to get a replacement amp meter that will fit nicely in the original hole?

I dont want to cut up my dash, id love to know if one is available that will fit in without  any modifications

I have 2 wires going to it now, id assume all amp meter would be the same?

Recommend you change to a Volt meter as many on here have done.

WHX??

Its a very standard 2 inch gauge. Measure the hole it's in.  Any auto parts place will have them and skads of them on line. Problem is what look do you like and choosing. I personally ditch the ammeter and go with a voltage meter. This involves just a tad bit of wiring tho.

probably makes more sense

What wiring is needed?

can you explain it?

Edit. I just went on amazon. Found a 2" volt meter with red/black wire hookup and it comes with 2 brackets

So hookup would be put some ends on the volt meter wires and plug/play?

No, NOT plug and play.

1. The two wires from the ammeter must be spliced together along with the red wire from the voltmeter (yes, three wires--be sure to make it a solid, weatherproof connection)

2. The black wire from the voltmeter goes to a good ground.

Fairly simple. Tie the two wires on the ammeter together and insulate off. The voltmeter will have two leads One (-) goes to ground the other positive goes to the ignition switch to see battery voltage in the run position. Easier if you have a hour meter just wire the + of the voltmeter to the + side of the hr meter.

Again many both analog and digital on the shopping sites.

This particular one even has a bling bling light!

I got this one just for eye candy.... Put the same one on my C-145 for functionality as to monitor battery volts since it doesn't have regulation . works great.

Ney ney Don... pretty good chance those ammeter wires are hot all the time.  Gauge would be on all the time. Depends on how the tractor is wiried I guess.

Point taken. Depends on the tractor's wiring and where the ammeter was. Your method will work all the time by putting the voltmeter on the other side of the ignition switch.

Ok doesnt seem hard at all.

2 wire from amp meter together, along with the red wire from new meter. fairly easy.

Black wire goes to a ground , also fairly easy and straight forward.

Be advised If the voltmeter reads voltage with the key off yer gonna have to go my route.

Please see @WHX??'s post. His method assures that the meter will not be active when the tractor is turned off at the key.

the one i ordered is does not light up

its not a digital meter, looks very similiar to my amp meter i have now, just says volts instead. Your typical 6v-16v with numbers and a "meter arm"

Here ya go Stegs.

You DO NOT want to tie it to an ammeter lead as Don suggested. DISCONNECT THE BATTERY  If your battery is in front of the dash remove it for best access. Remove the ammeter and tie the wires together and insulate well and install the volt meter.

Negative of the voltmeter to ground. Positive to the orange wire that I highlighted in yellow AFTER the fuse. You should not have to mess with the ignition switch at all although greasy Pete Lena would recommend checking the plug and switch terminals for corrosion and applying some dielectric grease just for upkeep.

The hot side of the light switch would be a good place to land the + from the voltmeter. Make sure all other connections are good, including grounds,  while you are in there and securely tie wrap things out of the way. Reconnect the battery

Done !

Your tractor may not have the color wires as depicted if someone else was in there molesting things.

Diagram is from a 78/79 C series.

I agree with WHX??. His way is certain to work--mine can leave the voltmeter live all the time and be a slow drain on the battery, even if it isn't illuminated.
