Attachment questions

YazellFarm

Hello all. I am a new owner of a 1988 520-H. The tractor was purchased new by my wife's grandmother and used weekly to maintain her farm. We're very excited to have it.

I have been reading as much as I can about attachments through the forum and other sources, but I still have some questions about attachments. I am new to Wheel Horse and anything beyond a lawn tractor. We have some land that needs tilling (around 0.75 acres) and have been looking at the various attachments for the tractor, though they are admittedly scarce.

- Are there brands other than Wheel Horse that people have successfully used for a tiller attachment?

- Will just about any Brinly plow blade attach to the tractor?

- What have others used to till their land with this tractor, other than the tiller attachment?

Bonus points if anyone within a few hours drive of Cincinnati has a tiller for sale :)

Thank you.

If you tractor is set up with a rear lift and Brinly hitch, you can use any Brinly rear attachment. Example: mold board plow, disc harrow, cultivator, rear grader blade, etc.

You can place an add in our wanted section to try to find attachments.

Finding attachments for a 520 is usually not a problem its paying the price for what sellers want.

The tiller can be off any 3, 4, or 500 series tractor but you will need the axle bracket and rear rockshaft kit plus the rear cable.

If looking for a tiller make sure all the pieces are there like the mid mount belt tensioner is with it. Things have a way of getting lost when a guy takes off an implement.

As Dan said a Brinly style hitch will fit right on but again you will need a rear lift cable and the tube it slides in. These were not standard on a 520 so many do not have them. They are available aftermarket but this is where things can start adding up price wise.

Keep an eye on CL and if you FB their marketplace and you will find a :wh: tiller. One can probably make another brand work but it would be a pain.

This is what's needed to run a tiller. plus the axle bracket which is available there too.

When you go to look at a tiller check the tines.  If the ends are pointed they are worn out and replacement is hideously expensive...

If the land hasn't been tilled before, you will probable want a plow, then a tiller, or a plow and a disk.

Depending on soil type, once its turned the first time you "may" be able to work it yearly with just a tiller.

Others can comment more on this.

Of course, once your set up with a plow you can find some plow days to join in the fun at.

Or just host a plow day at your property and these guys will plowed it for you.

Luckily, this is a small section of land that has been farmed for corn for decades. It sits in a weird orientation in relation to my property, so the farmer decided to discontinue farming it.

Be careful, you might find yourself traveling the country collecting, enjoying and working these tractors!

Most of these pictures are from “Uncle Jim’s” place in WI.  A measly 6 or 7 hour drive to listen to the tractors working (and his mouth jabber on)

:text-welcomeconfetti:to the forum @YazellFarm.  Good bunch of people here.  They will be glad to answer any Wheel Horse related questions you have - some of the answers will even be helpful.

@Pullstart - you didn't post your Smokey picture.  That is one of my favorites.:(

Always love to hear of a Wheel Horse that is being passed down within the family.

I got a Craftsman plow with one of my C-120's and turns out its a Brinley design just tagged as craftsman. I used it to plow my garden plot, then used push blade (lots of them around cheap) to level the furrows and finished with a tiller. Regular self propelled rear tine works if you can't find one for the wheel horse.

If you are not in a big rush keep your eye out on marketplace and craigs list as well as local yard sales and you can pick up a plow, blade and maybe a tiller.

You will need to install the rockshaft kit, hitch and axle bracket but the expense is worth it for all the implements you can use.

You can find a lot of the parts here  https://wheelhorsepartsandmore.com/

Good luck with the procurement.....its half the fun!

Thanks for the good info. We have the snow plow which I've read is good for dirt too? Just got a Brinly plow from a really cool guy by Troy OH. I'd love to find a tiller, but might end up getting a Brinly disc harrow instead for now. I'm mainly trying to rip out some old corn stalks and loosen the dirt up some.

I also need some ag tires. I have tire chains but don't think it's quite gonna cut it.
