Off-roading with the wheel horses

Recommended Posts

Hey guys been about a week since I was on the forum last. Since then my buddy put a new seal on my raider 10 trans axle so now that’s been running good I “ modified “the raider 10 hood I plan on putting metal mesh/wire and a cooling fan in place of the cross bars. And as you can see there was a failed attempt to climb a very steep rock. I’m not gonna lie I told him to do it. Luckily Dylan is ok. We both had horses roll on us yesterday and when it rolled on me it landed right in the family jewels :lol:4217C69F-7C5D-4EDC-AF7F-8C3B0941B263.jpeg.641cf3bf967fc6971e85d1cf18d4d529.jpegB97C5A01-AEC2-4C10-9D2B-0676EF06A439.jpeg.f2e7018df15f8295941c00198eb3d43d.jpeg

Remember that these old girls are splash lubricated - extreme angles from horizontal can result in oil starvation and connecting rod breakage ....

Yes me and my buddy have taken that into consideration the moment it tips we shut it off and tow it back without running and do an oil change just to be safe. And we also came up with the idea to attach a rope to the front when we try to go up steep slopes and tie the rope to a tree or something like that so it can’t tip. One question tho. How much of a angle is too much and is there an engine with pressurized lubercation that would be suited for doing something like this. One more thing. I told my buddy this but these machines were never meant to be used the way we are using them. We both have limited slip but he says it seems like my limited slip doesn’t work that well when towing up a dirt hill. Would that be my limited slip not working to the best of its ability or is it just the fact that there’s tractors where never designed to be off-road machines. Rather just garden work

This is the spring inside the trans that give you limited slip. It just puts pressure on the pinons giving them resistance to turning. It isn't much and these break. Remember limited slip is not posi traction or a locked axle.

Yeah and that’s what I was leaning towards. Yes these tractors have limited slip but for what we use them for i think me and my buddy have expected to much. All of our limited slips work. Anouther question i had is over time does the effectiveness of the LS go down or is it something that works untill it doesn’t

How much of an angle is too much??? Once the rod lets go and ventilates the block, you'll know.

I see a bunch of newer Toro's, Craftsman's, and Ariens single cylinder riders for sale - all were run low on oil and sideways on a slope - all with broken connection rods - all selling cheap.

Also is how I broke my arm in 100 pieces by tipping one over backwards. Is it worth it ??

It’s been at least a few months since I’ve been on the forum and even longer since I’ve been able to work on my wheel horse hobby. However I just got a 416 H toro mode. Yes sadly it has the toro decals on but I’m just glad to have it. I got it with a trade for my suburban and a bit of cash. It’s my first hydro tractor and I really enjoy riding it. Feels like a monster compared to my raider 10 and 12. Also me and my buddy Dylan @857lover where at the wheel horse show. Sadly we didn’t get a chance to walk around and find people we know on the forum but it was awesome. I do want to know who is the guy with the wheel horse motorcycle that thing is awesome.  in the picture my 416 H is on the left and Dylan’s is on the right.

Hey y’all. I recently got a raider 10 with a leaking seal. I went to a garden tractor parts store with the idea in mind that all raiders has 1 and 1 8th axles. So I bought that size seal. To my suprise it had 1 inch axles. The trans also has limited slip. And according to A to Z tractors it’s not common for a 1 inch axle trans to have LS my question is. Is this the original trans on my raider 10 model 1-0301 or did someone swap it out. Or did someone put 1 inch axles in a 1 1/8 axle transmission. I’m kinda stumped here.

Hey y’all. As some of you know I’m planning out on what I want to do to my raider 10 I would like to run decently wide super lugs on the rear. I think this would involve using spacers and different size rims just wondering if I could get some pointers thanks  the raider 10 right now is pretty much bone stock so it has the original rear tire and rim size. I’m thinking If I have wide tires it will not only help with traction but also it will allow the horse to grip on slopes thus reducing the chance of it rolling thanks, Dan
