I ended up being given some free wood. Both new saws are dull so I grabbed the trusty homelite xl-12.

I ran out of gas after the first tree was cut apart. Upon cracking the gas cap it started spraying gas everywhere. Didn’t think too much of it and fueled it up for the next go around.26AC8676-AAB0-48F2-9AD3-584C395A83D9.jpeg.44d7fdc24df99c5536e8e96a8e445259.jpeg

After I got all my sawing done I set the saw down to have some lunch. When I returned the carburetor was sitting in a pool of gas and the gas tank was still hissing.

im guessing it’s a clogged vent, but would anyone know where to look on a xl12? Little bit of a different beast than today’s saws

If you have a sintered bronze vent in the side of the gas cap, carefully tap it out by using a tiny punch or pick.  Behind it you will find a black blob that once was a duckbill valve.  Clean and replace the duckbill and bronze insert.  This may not prevent pressure buildup, but it is a good place to start.

@lynnmor

Ill try that. It’s a brand new gas cap. Could have manufacturing crud in it

Weird, those tanks shouldn't pressurize. Definitely clogged vent in the cap

:confusion-scratchheadyellow:      I don't know a thing about chainsaw fuel systems but if it has a vacuum fuel pump one of the check valves could be bad resulting in the fuel tank being pressurized.

Well, checked out the gas cap. The brand new cap was sold with a defective duckbill valve. It didn’t have a hole in it! Poked a hole in it with a paper clip and it’s seemed to resolve my issue

The duckbills are available on eBay.  If you have a defective one, expect some gas leakage in some positions.
