Lost drive

Recommended Posts

Bodie

Hi. I have a c120 and yesterday I lost drive. Checked the drive belt all ok. The worrying thing is when it’s not started I can put it in gear and I can push the tractor as though it is in neutral. I’ve jacked it up and when I turn the rear wheels the opposite moves in the opposite direction however when I hold one of the wheels I can still rotate the wheel even when in gear. Any help would be greatly appreciated. The grass is growing!!

Mark across the hubs and axle ends  also across the input pulley and its shaft  then push it around try to drive it.  See if anyone of them moved out of alignment.

:WRS:

Check the High/Low lever to be sure it is not in between the two positions.

Well, if you can turn one wheel and the other goes in the opposite direction...it is not your differential.  Also, holding one wheel and the other turns is what is supposed to happen.  Almost has to be the hi/low range shifter is not engaged or the input pulley or a hub is spinning.  If it is not any of those, there are one of two woodruff keys inside the transmission.  :eusa-think:

So marked up as suggested. All remain aligned.
Seems to be in hi but won’t go to low. Although I’ve had this problem befor.

Ok. If it’s the woodruff keys is it a case of removing the transmission box and opening it up ? Are there any manuals for doing this? Thanks

Input pulley was marked and that too stayed aligned.

@stevasaurus has some really good vids on tranny repair. We also have manuals if it comes to that. Lets make sure its not an external problem first.

If it is something inside, you will have to drop and open the transmission.  Look at Section V for your transmission, and you can use this thread to see what they look like inside.  1st, make sure it is not the hi/low shifter or the rear hubs.

Well. I think I’m going to have a look inside so cleaning the box up ready for extraction.
Out of interest would a transmission box from a 312 fit my c120? There’s one for sale nearby.

Thanks

It will fit, but that transmission might have 1" axles instead of the 1 1/8" axles you have.  Yours is probably a #5091, that one (for sale) may be a #110995.

Being from the UK, both of those horses may have been assembled in Belgium.  That said, Wheel Horse could have used anything to put a horse together from there.  They loved to use up parts they had on hand.

It is not that hard to open a trans and fix the inside.  All parts are available, new and used.  The one place to check if it is a woodruff key inside...the reduction gear on top of the cluster gear shaft.

BTW, Welcome to Red Square.  :UK:

Kinda odd for that to happen ain't it Steve?

Maybe the hi/lo gear shattered?

On the part that your clutch rod attaches to on the rear, make sure the spring pin isn't broken where it attaches to the rod coming out of the transmission....

Thanks for the replies. Transmission box all loosened now. Ready to drop. Can the gear levers come off? Looks kinda tricky to manoeuvre through the chassis etc.

The main shifter has a allen head set screw with lock nut under the boot. Loosen that and the shifter will come out. The hi/lo lever has a roll pin that is best removed after dropping the trans. It shouldn't  be in the way to much to drop.

@WHX??  Jim, that is not only rare, but it is really, really, really rare.  That is 3 Really's.  It did happen to a member on here about 2 or 3 months ago...that is the 1st time I have heard of one breaking inside.   I'm not thinking a gear broke, because Bodie did not mention like any of that happened.  If a gear did destruct, the trans may have been locked up...that does not seem to be the case..  Might be the hi/low fork now with what Bodie is saying.

@Bodie when you go to open the trans, make sure the shallow side is down (input shaft side).
