Bens vintage tractors 1,542 #1 Posted March 31, 2022 So I picked up a $50 417-A the other day (along with a more expensive 416-h lol). I have about 5 or 6 Diesel engines just sitting around and I think it’s time to put one on a tractor again. What do you guys think? Got thinking about the diesel conversion. Have you done that on a hydro? You really can't gear those up or down any to gain speed. Another serious consideration would be the amount of torque that the transmission is capable of absorbing. Keep me posted on what you do with that engine please. I sure like my diesel powered tractor. Tons of power & runs forever on a cup of fuel. I would not worry too much about the tranny, plenty of other manufacturers put diesels in their tractors behind the same transmission that they used on their gas tractors. Seems like the rear rims are not as wide as they aught to be, are turned inward and what is the story on those wheel weights? The deck looks like it came from a vertical shaft , is it operable like that? Also, got to ask, What the heck is that yellow bar sticking up at the rear? Is it a lightning rod? Uses a single hexagonal cross section belt that wraps around the PTO pulley, through the idler, and around both spindles. Some of the 1990-ish tractors came with 6” front rims to accommodate that deck. I think they might have had 22” diameter rear tires too. The deck is arranged sort of diagonally in there so the blades overlap and it makes it quite long from front to back. So bigger tires would interfere. the rear tires and wheels are obviously from something else. It’s the same shell used on a bunch of vertical shaft tractors. it’s a great cutting deck compared to the three blade 48 and especially 42 incher which are pretty lousy in comparison. When this is done there has to be flat idlers on the deck and on one side of the mule drive. They plowed with it on sidewalks. That pole is for a beacon. The weights are a classic style my pulling club use to use. They are solid lead! 4 2 Share this post Link to post Share on other sites
