K321s oil capacity right?

Recommended Posts

Mustang67ford

Replaced the oil in a newly aquired 414-8 with a kohler k321s.  According to the manual, the oil capacity is 2qt.  When I did this, needed to add about another 1/3 quart to get over the "add" mark on the dipstick (now 2.3 qt in it.  My dip stick is correct for the motor based on the spec number.  All looks original, here are pics of some measurements.  So, do I add more oil which would end up closer to 3qt, take some out to be just at 2qt and remark dipstick, or let it alone?  I also had read a bulletin that when they added the oil sensor, the capacity was to increase to 2.5 qt and the shorter dip stick so a little confused on this as I do have the sensor.

I always use the stick!

And being the right number on the stick,  use the stick!

Yes use the stick but my k301s takes 2.5 quarts.

They changed the oil capacities mid way through 1986 model year so reprinted the operator manual to correct the oil quantity now 2-1/2 quarts.

Download this manual

I’m not looking to hijack the thread but I’d like to ‘now if the 2.5 qt. applies the k321s from 1969 for GT 14.

No it does not. When they added the low oil switch they increased the capacity by 1/2 quart.

In 1969 the GT-14 falls in with the 14hp Automatic models.

The extra 0.5qt brought it up to full.  So when they added the oil switch, did they go with a deeper pan?  Otherwise, how could kohler just decide to add another 0.5qt when you are not supposed to overfill.

A shorter dipstick was issued so suspect the oil pan stayed the same.

I find that interesting when they say "do not overfill" yet you can go ahead and add another 1/2 qt.  Guess that was the safety factor that they took.
