Rides2000 6 #1 Posted March 30, 2022 I have a 1997 312-8 wheel horse with a 36" rear discharge. I would like to upgrade to a bigger one but do not know compatibility. There is one online that is 42" wheelhorse with mule but do not know if it works. Any ideas?
squonk 41,040 #2 Posted March 30, 2022 (edited) Wrong deck. That one is mid 60's. Anything from the mid 70's on up will work. Edited March 30, 2022 by squonk
Rides2000 6 #3 Posted March 31, 2022 Thanks. How can I tell the difference?
Handy Don 12,174 #4 Posted March 31, 2022 (edited) That one has a single large support member running from front to back. You want one with two smaller front-to-back support bars and a smaller lifting bar, joined by rods between them like this: Edited March 31, 2022 by Handy Don 3
daveoman1966 3,745 #5 Posted March 31, 2022 This 42" deck is the style to fit your 312-8. The pic above by Handy Don is a 48"...but it would also fit. 2

A lot depends on your terrain, obstacles, and how high you let the grass go between mowings. For relatively flat and open and taking off only a couple inches of grass, the 48" will do well and fairly quickly on your 312-8. Get hilly, have to work around a lot of stuff, and try to bushwhack really high stuff and it'll go but you'll have to slow down. NY is a big place, but near me (Hudson Valley, NYC Metro area), decent looking 42" decks come up fairly often at around $200-350 depending on condition, 48's are less common and a bit more money. 1
Rides2000 6 #8 Posted April 6, 2022 I think 48" is the way to go.
kpinnc 11,936 #9 Posted April 10, 2022 So long as you keep the 6 inch front wheels, the 37 side discharge will fit. Also, the 36 side or rear discharge, the 42 side or rear discharge, and the 48 side discharge. A 312-8 will carry a 48, but struggle in heavy grass if you don't cut often. Basically all "Attach-A-Matic" decks except the 60 side discharge will fit your tractor.
