Handy Don 12,451 #2 Posted March 30, 2022 Bummer. If it is any solace, know that every one of the members here has done at least one "oops" like this (in fact, there was a recent thread where folks owned up to some of the most colorful ones). But that doesn't help you get your tractor fixed. Unless the axle itself or the trans casing is damaged, this is repairable. For parts you'll need the new bearing, the seal you already have, and a gasket for when you put the transmission back together. And of course a refill on the oil. I don't know the level of your mechanical skills and tooling, though. Have you ever taken an engine or transmission apart and put it back together? There are some threads here on rebuilding transmissions that are worth watching. Failing that, you'll have to have someone do it for you or with you. 4
kpinnc 12,385 #3 Posted March 30, 2022 You gotta go inside that tranny. That axle bearing will not hold up in that condition. It's likely a good time to replace both sides and be done with it. That will set you up for another 50 years. These trannies are very simple, and lots of folks on here can help you out. I know a couple members have full take down and reassembly videos as well. 3

I know someone here will have part numbers. They are posted many times over the years. No, a press isn't required. It is helpful, but not absolutely necessary. You can GENTLY drive them in. I've used a socket and a light hammer. Just be careful. 3 1

roadapples 6,983 #8 Posted March 30, 2022 Get a hold of Lowell at Wheel Horse Parts and More. In the vendors section. He has what you need....
oliver2-44 9,848 #9 Posted March 30, 2022 You can split that transmission and Possible just remove the differential without disturbing the other gears and shifter forks. But it really depends what it looks like when you get in there. 2

Lowell offers complete or partial transmission kits. https://wheelhorsepartsandmore.com/product/base-kit-4-for-manual-transmission/ The /Toro part number for the axle bearring is 1526/9416. Checking this cross reference sheet the Koyo # is B-1816, Motion industries # is 00090569 The Jungle site has a listing for them. https://www.amazon.com/Koyo-B-1816-Bearing-Complement-Rotational/dp/B007EDV9P6 You could also take the Koyo #B-1816 to your local Napa & they should be able to order them for you. Handy Don 12,451 #15 Posted March 30, 2022 (edited) You'll want to plan ahead for this job and give yourself the space and time to understand each step before starting. You'll need room to work, and it'll be a lot easier if you have a bench that can hold the transmission at a comfortable working height with the brake side up and the input pulley side down--some folks use a WorkMate and clamps. Be sure you have good lighting, protection for the inevitable drips and slashes of oil, and a way to keep your tools handy. You already know that the transmissions are heavy so be careful with that too! When you encounter something you don't understand or is confusing (and you will), come back here and ask (bringing pictures, right? ). Someone will know how to get you over the hurdle. EVERYONE HERE was a rookie at this at one time and many of use can still remember it. Edited March 30, 2022 by Handy Don
stevasaurus 22,858 #16 Posted March 30, 2022 Assuming you have the #5060 10 pinion Limited Slip transmission in your 1267, this is the thread with videos for that transmission. The gasket for the trans is WH #3912. The gasket is the same number for your 857 horse transmission.
8ntruck 7,082 #17 Posted March 30, 2022 if it is a limited slip, would it be worth replacing the limited slip springs while he is in there?
Handy Don 12,451 #18 Posted March 30, 2022 I agree that if anything inside hints at excessive wear or damage, then opening the differential to replace the friction ring is probably a good idea, especially since those are again available. Before that, though, I'd carefully check the axle bearing on the other side. But if the only issue was a leaking seal, I would not go looking for trouble.
stevasaurus 22,858 #19 Posted March 30, 2022 Depends on what it looks like, but I think I would replace it if I was in there.
Maxwell-8 4,290 #20 Posted March 30, 2022 Gosh, bad axle bearings, Have had my good share of them. Makes sure nothing of the bearing is still in the tranny, good practice is to open the diff, just to make sure it's empty.

Think he was referring to the other bearing but for $25 or so it's certainly not a bad idea to put a new spring in there as well for the LS. You're in there anyway so just take care of it then is my opinion. It's one spring that's like a circle that goes inside the differential and it springs the pinion gears. Once you open the trans you can find it and it should make sense to you after you see it 2
