Tragic Storm

Yesterday was a clear sunny day when the phones and TVs lit up warning motorist of a white out snow storm. 

   An hour later three lives were lost when this happened.

 @Ed Kennell  yes I  saw that on the tube , very obvious today is the brain dead state that people are in , never looking  ahead never sending an intended move , guesstimate  passing , never using your mirrors . regularly use my 4 way flashers on an up coming problem , to try and fend off a  rear end smash . love the NY  drivers that will never give up the left passing lane , and oblivious to traffic issues . when giving tips to my grandkids , always point put what's going on , keep your face in your mirror . there should have been a combined flashing warning exposure to that pile up . mirror pete

@SylvanLakeWH  going to new London ct over the bridge , the other day , suddenly encountered a white out cloud in the bridge to water area . literally could not see into the sudden fog , pulled to right lane 4 way flashers on , hopefully out of the way . people going by at 75-80 ,just driving into a wall of solid fog , really ?  just glad to have made the trip without  incident ,  4 way pete

A few a weeks ago the most insane snow squall I ever seen came through our area.  It was dead calm , crystal clear and sunny, when the squall line arrived it was zero visibility, couldn't see 2 feet standing outside. An inch of snow fell in about 5 minutes.  Now turning around in the opposite you could still see the clear sky and sun.

So image driving on the highway at 75 mph and out of nowhere someone covers your head with a paper bag.    Lucky there wasn't more deaths.

That same squall line pushed through Central NJ.  In thirty seconds it was zero visibility for about 5 minutes.  It was like a switch was flipped, that instantly. 

 

That crash may have been avoidable, but if it happened as quickly there as it did here, perhaps not.

 

It passed as quickly as it appeared and within an hour the 1/2 to 3/4 inch of snow had melted.

 

I've heard that the best strategy in a blinding situation, snow fog or rain, is to pull as far off the road as possible and to NOT turn on the 4-ways.

The reasoning was that you didn't want some ignorant idiot to 'follow' your flashers, thinking that's the way to go.

I guess it makes sense because those ignorant idiots probably think you can see ahead, but they can't, so they follow you.

 

I hope to never have the chance to test the theory.

I heared about in the late news.

That braindead driver syndrom ain‘t only local at you site, it is spreaded  and could be happen even here.

 

Most drivers today with their new super duper high tech vehicles here just 100 percently trusted on their electronic hightech boxes and couldn’t imagine only a fract that there is also physics in the game while driving..

 

Sometimes the drivers brain must get the control back in such situations

but with all that electronic assistance systems.

The humans will not be willing to do that,

they just trust their Vehicles blind an hope the vehicle will be handle all situations.

 

 

Just the smallest piece of knowledge of physics should prevent the blindness of them,

 but they be trained to just trust their vehicles.

We learned to take care of yours and your surrounding,

like one hand for the ship one hand for the sailor.

The car manufacturer give such persons with all that electronic nonsense the ability to drive a car

even if they sometimes be mental not realy able to drive.

Here they just talk about high speed would kill, that is in my opinion nonsense, 
just remove the idiots of the roads will make it safer for all.

Driving more than 30 years lemme say nearly crashfree „little more than quick“ but the only 2 crashes i had was

once a young lady on a red stop light crashed into me because she playing on her cellphone while driving

and the other one was a UPS Truck hit me while he forgot pull the Handbrake...

Sadly mostly others beeing hurt instead of the idiots themself.

Good question. I don’t think so.

 

Part of the problem is all the gizmos and gadgets…anti-lock brakes, all wheel drive, lane departure systems etc… people think they can just drive the same regardless of conditions and the “technology” will keep them safe… 

 

Michigan’s routine storms - look in the ditches and it’s mostly 4wd pickups, awd suvs etc…  Can’t fix stupid…

I just drove through there Saturday evening and it was cloudy, foggy and snowing. It wasn’t so bad you couldn’t see but that’s the first time I have ever drove in those conditions. I’m just a Florida boy so I’m used to water, just not the frozen kind.😁

One thing i was big on when the kids were teens starting to drive was snow driving. I remember we got a few inches on a Saturday. Told my daughter lets go out for a drive. She said really? We went down to the local school parking lot and I made he gun it  and turn the wheel hard. After a 360 and a half we stopped and I ask her how did that feel. She told me that was scary. Yeah out of control huh? Now lets see how we can push this thing and not have that happen. Lots of learning went on that day. kind of fun too. But she found out where that edge was to losing control

A few big rigs and person that has never been there before, bad recipe.

Did the same exact thing with my daughter and grand daughter. The grandson is on his permit now so that will happen next winter. Best to have them experience the "out of control" in a controlled environment like an open lot. Like you say, lots of learning and preparedness so that way when or if it ever happens, they're somewhat prepared for it and hopefully don't panic.

Why were there so many semi-trucks involved?  Those guys should know better.  That's what makes me think this happened so quickly as to be nearly unavoidable.

In the video posted above we can hear the wrecks while the visibility is at least 100 yards.  Add to that the fact that one should be able to see a storm ahead before entering it, of course it would require being aware of your surroundings.  It is the proctologist syndrome where each is giving the one in front a full rectal exam.  I believe the speed limit there is 65, not 75, and that is on a good day.  I81 does have way too much truck traffic which adds to the problem.

But... the brain dead... WAY overdriving the conditions.

 

So they could see 100 yards, but could they STOP in 100 yards?  Obviously not !

 

And the 'rocket scientist' video you posted Lynn...  that appeared to be a big rig... so I guess many of those guys must be brain dead too !  He was obviously going WAY too fast.  I hope that guy that dove outta the way was all right !  Scary sheet right there...  Makes me not wanna drive anymore in ANY conditions !

This highway, I81 South, is scheduled to reopen tomorrow.        But we are now under another winter advisory with freezing rain, sleet, and snow forecast for tonight.

Snow over ice is a recipe for another disaster.

I dunno what‘s the reasons on your site, but i believe the same as here.

I think semi trucks are not as hard restricted as here on our side in speed and lane choosing.

Here they must drive allway’s on the right side and normally a overtake ain‘t possible because of speed limitations to 80 Km/h.

 

The truth show a different pict, most of the new Trucks runns 90Km/h or higher but they must be electronic limited.

Electronic can be reprogrammed or hacked or annoyed - shure it’s forbidden but it became daily practise.

 

 

Trucker was 30 years ago a dream job, but today - forgot it -

 

controlled by GPS and extremly unfair time limits they can‘t be held by a driver in normal conditions, that‘s the truth.

They have to race to get just a littlebit of profit. No fun today to drive a Truck or a Semi Truck.

and even the idiots on the road grows incredibly fast.

 

I have the Truck license and driving when i‘m younger allway‘s for few weekends a tour,

but today i don‘t be interested in, ain‘t make Fun to drive a Truck these day‘s.

I sometimes assume those are good drivers that have been there, and can handle weather.... aka "know better".....I figure most have not been there.

 

I do know from time to time the state puts restriction on the interstates to limit traffic and big trucks when the weather is going or is bad.

Like you said Jeff, might not have been much warning with this storm, freak???

 

Last time I was on the interstate I'll bet >%30 were semi trucks.

Why were there so many semi-trucks involved?  I81 is a main N/S highway for the trucking industry and all lanes are usually filled with semis.       Those guys should know better.  That's what makes me think this happened so quickly as to be nearly unavoidable.    An alert warning lit up my phone about an hour before the crash.

 

I am NOT disagreeing about the masses of brain dead drivers out there though!   Way too many drivers are engaged in phone conversations (audio and video) and are only seeing the end of thier hood in thier periphial vision.
