C-Series gear oil fill location?

Recommended Posts

OutdoorEnvy

I have a C-100 and thought it would fill through the dipstick tube hole.  But that hole is tiny and no fill funnel is small enough to fit and gear oil is just going everywhere.  Is there another fill port or what's the trick for the C series gear oil filling?

The best case scenario is to remove the shifter.

When you put it back replace the dog point set screw and shift boot.

As in unless the boot is in excellent condition, a new boot.

Maybe get a pump that fits on the screwcap, and remove on of the bolts on the gastank support

Well got to looking and made something work.  Found an old bottle of gear oil with the little cone end cap.  Cut that small so it would press into the small dipstick tube hole.  Then was able to push in a small funnel to that one and it did work.  Just slow going with the pouring and waiting for it to drain.  But did get the job done.

I've done something similar in the past. Worked pretty well.

Just get the funnel so it will sit steady and not fall over. Pour a few ounces in and walk away for a while. Repeat. Repeat.

That was pretty much the drill!  I was also working on the 312 so made the back and forth not too bad.  Got it filled over about 20-30 mins or so.

Next time… if you unscrew one of those 3/8” bolts next to the dipstick tube, that’ll give the air a place to go :handgestures-thumbupright:

Got to be a joke there somewhere about flatulation and having a screw loose.

When I filled the 8-speed on the Work Horse I used a bottle of gear oil with the cone on top… just squeezed the oil out and it did not flood the dipstick tube which is I guess 5/8ths to maybe 3/4 inch in diameter.

It worked well and when the bottle was almost empty I just stood the bottle upside down until the bottle drained.

Of course I had removed one of the seat support bracket bolts so it would vent also.

That will work but you blocking the air that needs to vent (slow go). like a couple of my boys here said next time remove one of the bolts next to the fill hole it will go a lot faster. Also if you drained the old out did you jack the front of the tractor up at least 18 inches?

Easy and quickest way I've found:

FILL VENT (6) - Copy.JPG

FILL VENT (8) - Copy.JPG

I did indeed!  Used my 3 ton truck jack at full reach on the front!
