Belts wear from the sides. The other belt was probably originally 5/8" probably worn down to 9/16"

If you have another 1/2" pulley there slip the belt on it and compare it to how that belt fits on the pulley on the engine

A 5/8" belt would grab somewhat on that trans pulley. But I'm guessing your original belt was a 5/8 but worn down enough so it worked well. Then when you bought the new 1/2" belt it would work on light loads but slip in 3rd on that front pulley because it's too wide.

You need a bearing separator to grab the pulley  and a gear puller to grab the separator.

Bearing Separator

2 jaw gear puller, 135mm x 100mm, bearing puller, 00128 - Pro-Lift-Montagetechnik

@857lover  you say it previously  worked really good , not knowing any related details , that could be causing your issue ,  it should have been a simple find and fix. is that the drive  belt that was on it before trans swap?  hope you  find the issue , some other member that has gone thru this , will hopefully chime in , pete
