Bad injectors? Ya think?

Recommended Posts

I thought some of you might like to see what Bosch CIS injectors spray like (or don't, or dribble) after sitting for 20 years.

#1 is very low volume, #4 is a real mess!

The 'squeal' you hear is actually normal for these, you don't hear it when they're installed.

I would assimilate to the #4 injector.

Definitely not going to get a nice flower pattern spray out of #4. Are they rebuildable or do they need to be replaced?

replaced

Might be able to improve them by pressure cleaning but at 100K miles they're ready for replacement.

After 60 some odd years....dribbling ain't just for basketball!

And sometime it seem like the game goes on and on and on!

This 'tip' with the O-ring image.png.ad9dbeb1b50039990b6b08e1b154a232.png is missing from #3 injector image.png.bba11bca063a7ebc950e823249143577.png  ... when I pulled it it remained down inside the injector tube.

Thankfully I was able to retrieve it without it falling inside the engine and having to pull the head!  That would probably have been the end of this project for me!

I just took a closer look at the injectors and I notice that #4, the one with the prostrate trouble the tip is almost off as well!  BUT, I think this was actually like this when the car got parked 20 years ago!  The markings certainly indicate that it was running like that for quite some time!

image.png.8845c22c26444cb3c75a1d70b1aeb935.png  It wouldn't be all discolored there if that tip were all the way on.  As I think back on it, the last year or so that we drove the car 20 years ago it wasn't running real well.

I pulled and cleaned the plugs in preparation for starting it, and #1 appeared it was running quite lean and the injector shows that it wasn't spraying enough fuel.

2 and 3 were pretty 'normal' looking, but #4 was quite dark, running rich.

Now I think I know why!  Factory defect!  These injectors were never out of the engine since 1987!
