How to run wide super lugs

Recommended Posts

danweikert21

Hey y’all. As some of you know I’m planning out on what I want to do to my raider 10 I would like to run decently wide super lugs on the rear. I think this would involve using spacers and different size rims just wondering if I could get some pointers thanks :handgestures-thumbupright: the raider 10 right now is pretty much bone stock so it has the original rear tire and rim size. I’m thinking If I have wide tires it will not only help with traction but also it will allow the horse to grip on slopes thus reducing the chance of it rolling :blink:thanks, Dan

yea there’s a couple things we should know like what is the biggest size that will fit with no spacers and where to get spacers and what is the lug pattern what kind of tires do you recommend for going in the woods and muddy conditions etc thanks for your input guys :bow-blue:

Wider tires will help with stability and definitely look cool

some run ATV tires instead of super lugs

Traction is about weigh be sq inch of tire on the ground and the type of ground your on.

So wider tires by them self may or may not improve traction, typically not.

For the wider tires to improve traction you need to add weight such as tubing them and filling them with rv antifreeze, a product called Rimguard, etc.

You can also add steel weights.

You also need to go with wider rims so the tread is flat on the ground.  Significantly wider tires on stock rims will result in a rounded lug (so possible even less tread on ground than normal)

Weights that bolt on the rim are the best as they don't put extra load on the rear axle bearings, but they are pricey

You can bolt weights inside or outside the frame in front of the transmission but they add a cracking stress to the transmission mount which might need to be reinforced

For the off road trail riding your doing their is a balance of how much weight.

While weight will improve traction on dry or slightly soft ground, it will also sink you deeper in wet muddy spots that you might float over with less weight

With the addition of weight, skinny tires will improve traction on dry or slightly soft ground since they put the most weight per sq in of tire on the ground.

So its not as simple as throwing wider tires on them

I personally like to use 8 1/2 wide rims for the 10.50 tires with rims that have a deeper offset so they fit up under the fender pan farther.  I haven't had a problem with clearance on a gear drive Horse.  A hydro Horse is close on clearance, but you can move the hubs out a little if they are not stuck. Move the hubs out a little , not a lot.

You can also get some 1/4 spacers from Kerber Machine to help with clearance on the hydro tractor .

If you want the wide tire look on your tractor, don't even bother with Deestone ag tires. I have a pair of 10.50 Deestones on 8 1/2 wide wheels and they look like 8.50 tires. The Deestones are narrower than what they say.

Carsille tires are about the only brand that run true to size.  Most of the other brands run smaller

The spacers are 5 lugs on 4 1/2" bolt circle you need Jeep spacers with the largest center hole I  don't remember the actual size  As to the actual largest tire diameter I can't say as I don't have a Raider.

If you are changing WH bolts to studs and lug nuts they are 7/16" fine thread will need full treads.  The spacers will be 1/2" studs and the wheels need to be drill out to at least 17/32" to be able to remove them easily.

You Can Not Move the Hubs out. Wheel Horse centered the hubs on the center of the Woodruff Key moving the hub will cock the key and the hub is free to slide. It will destroy the hub and axle key way.

I checked the center hole in my spacers is around 3 1/4" or 82 mm. They need to be flat faced with no raised place for the rim center hole.

Spacers are fairly cheap, and Ebay is a good source. Might not use them on a 5K lb truck, but for a garden tractor they are fine.

As Lee said before- 5 on 4.5 pattern, lug centric, and you'll have to ream your wheels to accept the 1/2 lugs. But they do work very well.

Hi Dan,  this is my first post so I’m fumbling.   I’ve been running double 2 1/2” spacers stacked to give me 5” on each side for years with only one issue.  The bolts came loose once so I torqued em down good and no more problems. My property is all hill and the increased stability is huge.  If changing wheels check the setback before buying spacers , they are not all the same.  I bought my spacers on eBay dirt cheap.  You will have to run a 1/2 inch drill through the holes which hardly removes any metal.

I find that when I’m off-roading the places I have the most issues is when I’m going up a slope horizontally it’s an uneasy feeling when you feel it’s about to roll

luckly I haven’t pushed any of my horses to hard but I def want to make it hug those hills. :wh:

Hi Dan, I’ll take a better picture but if you look close at the left side you can see it’s two spacers bolted together.  I’ll check my eBay history but it’s been years.  You can bolt any combination together to get the size you want but besides the bolt pattern there are also some differences in the center holes to consider.

Hi Dan ,  no luck with my eBay history.   I see I used three spacers 2 @ 11/2 and 1 @ 2” to get my 5” total.

the only reason for using so much is that my non WheelHorse wheels have a deep setback when measured from the back.

find wheels with more setback (from the front) and you’ll need less spacing.

I worried about the leverage on the bearings but it’s been working hard for years with no problems.

You raider only has 1" 4 pinion they are tough but not invincible.  Bigger fatter tires are more stress... be careful with the chain jerking....

miller tire sells garden tractor 'wheel 'blanks'

they sell the outer rim as a separate piece. (where your tire mounts)  12x10.5 wide!

and they sell the middle part  (where you bolt it to your hub)

you buy 2 of each

weld the middle part to the outer part (set your backspacing wherever you wish)   this means no spacers needed

i did this and then had the rims powdercoated

 i run 26X12X12 tires

sorry no pics

hope this all makes sense/helps

It’s been at least a few months since I’ve been on the forum and even longer since I’ve been able to work on my wheel horse hobby. However I just got a 416 H toro mode. Yes sadly it has the toro decals on but I’m just glad to have it. I got it with a trade for my suburban and a bit of cash. It’s my first hydro tractor and I really enjoy riding it. Feels like a monster compared to my raider 10 and 12. Also me and my buddy Dylan @857lover where at the wheel horse show. Sadly we didn’t get a chance to walk around and find people we know on the forum but it was awesome. I do want to know who is the guy with the wheel horse motorcycle that thing is awesome.  in the picture my 416 H is on the left and Dylan’s is on the right.

Hey y’all. I recently got a raider 10 with a leaking seal. I went to a garden tractor parts store with the idea in mind that all raiders has 1 and 1 8th axles. So I bought that size seal. To my suprise it had 1 inch axles. The trans also has limited slip. And according to A to Z tractors it’s not common for a 1 inch axle trans to have LS my question is. Is this the original trans on my raider 10 model 1-0301 or did someone swap it out. Or did someone put 1 inch axles in a 1 1/8 axle transmission. I’m kinda stumped here.

Hey guys been about a week since I was on the forum last. Since then my buddy put a new seal on my raider 10 trans axle so now that’s been running good I “ modified “the raider 10 hood I plan on putting metal mesh/wire and a cooling fan in place of the cross bars. And as you can see there was a failed attempt to climb a very steep rock. I’m not gonna lie I told him to do it. Luckily Dylan is ok. We both had horses roll on us yesterday and when it rolled on me it landed right in the family jewels
