312-8 will not start

Ok, what year is this? The model number is faded so bad you can’t see it. It has a 6 terminal key switch. The key switch is new and the solenoid is new… but it won’t start by the key. The seat switch has three wires… not two like you’d normally expect. It must be the clutch or PTO switch? I have one wiring diagram, but it’s the wrong one due to the wire colors and the seat switch having two wires. I’m stumped, I’m all ears!😀

The wire from the "S" terminal of the key switch goes to half of the PTO switch, then to the clutch switch before going to the oil century relay and finally to one of the small terminals on the solenoid, the other small terminal goes to ground. If you use a small jumper wire from the battery "+" to the ungrounded small terminal of the solenoid it should close and the starter turn over.

The seat switch has nothing to do with starting, it turns off the ignition when the PTO is on and you are out of the seat. 

1986 to 1989 had the maroon decal set.

If the steering wheel is the original one which it probably is, It appears to be an 85, 6 or 7.

@JCM Excellent! 85 was the year that they did AC headlights and DC ignition. I have an 85 310, a whole different ball of wax! 😀

'85 and '86 had the K Series Kohler engines, '87 was the first year for the Magnum in a Wheel Horse.

@953 nut So, I should have continuity (W/ clutch pedal pressed and PTO off) from Tan to lt blue?  Yes, the solenoid is grounded. Your wiring is for 87-88, is that the only one that took 6 terminal key switch’s?

Have the serial number of the engine? That will tell you what year Kohler made the engine.

Could be the same year as the tractor or one model year newer.

The ignition switch number from the factory was 111215 which was replaced by 103-991 and has been used on Magnum powered Wheel Horses for several years.
