Motor - derives it power from an external source (lectrics, etc)

Engine - creates its power by converting .. something (gas/steam/etc)

That's what I was taught too.

Except petroleum is converted from other stuff to oil to gas to fire to pressure to movement… so… there goes that theory… :hide:

With the coming Electric Vehicles, I have yet to hear them say anything about them having electric engines.

I'm in the engine being gas powered, and the motor being electric/ battery powered.

As usual there are exceptions to every rule.

Some years back when I first was getting into anything that had a small ENGINE, my friend who is a retired small ENGINE mechanic, would ALWAYS correct me when I used to refer to the ENGINE as a motor. He would always say motors = electric, engines = combustion. I also have a cousin who is a gear head and an electrician. He builds his own MOTORS. Owns 2 57 Chevys. A Chevy II, all that he rebuilt and restored. I have shared some pics of his cars in the past. He always refers to the ENGINE as a MOTOR. As far as boats go..... guess it depends on the size of the boat weather it has a motor or an engine !

Motors are electric. In the army during WVMS, if you called an engine a motor you were doing pushups....:angry-banghead:

OK Jay, I think we have a majority on the motor vs engine debate.

Ya wanna start the  rifle vs gun?

That’s easy…

All rifles are guns… but all guns are not rifles… :handgestures-thumbupright:

Seven Marine is headquartered in Germantown, Wisconsin and production of the 627-horsepower outboard motor begins in April 2015.

The new D13-1000 sees Volvo Penta move into the 1000hp marine leisure engine market for the first time,

I’ve always been a “motors are electric” guy. To the point that when I watch one of my automotive shows and my wife is with me, she will often point out when they call an engine a motor. So now, even if I wanted to call an engine a motor, my wife would just have another reason to correct me, lol.

I was... rather shocked as I happened onto this thread. My first thought was... ehem... (throat clearing)... does it really matter?

Then... I began to think of all the names I have heard in mechanic's shops... and I thought to myself... you know... there are a lot of names that these guys are leaving out.

******-******

*****-**-****

***-**-*-*****

***-****-****

AMONG... many other combinations... but those are the basics. :laughing-rolling:

I used stars above to... contemplate what words they are called... (I'll leave that to your imagination).

Bottom line... whether you call it an engine... or motor... there are many other words for them...

Agreed!  Let's apply that logic to the engine/motor debate

All engines are motors...but all motors are not engines

EB you forgot why they call it "motor oil"? :D

There is motor oil, I have a 1/4 HP electric motor that has little spring cap above each bearing for a few drops of motor oil. It's probley at least 100 years old.

In reference to the lump under the hood of your car it seems that the haughtier we are the more apt we are to call it an engine.  I, being as haughty as they come, call them engines.

Boat engines are called “outboard motors” or “engines.”  Very rarely, “outboard engine.”

Lots of mention of electric motors.  But there are also hydraulic, pneumatic, and vacuum motors.  Probably other types.  You’d think a steam engine would more aptly be named a motor.  Hero’s engine too.

The real dilemma in life is whether the evening meal is called supper or dinner.

Best left for etymologists I suppose.  Or is that entomologists?   Sometimes I can’t remember the difference and it bugs me beyond words.
