D_Mac 8,610 #29 Posted March 20, 2022 Some years back when I first was getting into anything that had a small ENGINE, my friend who is a retired small ENGINE mechanic, would ALWAYS correct me when I used to refer to the ENGINE as a motor. He would always say motors = electric, engines = combustion. I also have a cousin who is a gear head and an electrician. He builds his own MOTORS. Owns 2 57 Chevys. A Chevy II, all that he rebuilt and restored. I have shared some pics of his cars in the past. He always refers to the ENGINE as a MOTOR. To the point that when I watch one of my automotive shows and my wife is with me, she will often point out when they call an engine a motor. I began to think of all the names I have heard in mechanic's shops... and I thought to myself... you know... there are a lot of names that these guys are leaving out. ******-****** *****-**-**** ***-**-*-***** ***-****-**** AMONG... many other combinations... but those are the basics. I used stars above to... contemplate what words they are called... (I'll leave that to your imagination). I, being as haughty as they come, call them engines. Boat engines are called “outboard motors” or “engines.” Very rarely, “outboard engine.” Lots of mention of electric motors. But there are also hydraulic, pneumatic, and vacuum motors. Probably other types. You’d think a steam engine would more aptly be named a motor. Hero’s engine too. The real dilemma in life is whether the evening meal is called supper or dinner. Best left for etymologists I suppose. Or is that entomologists?
