A great deal of newer stuff already being made to metric dimensions and the inch-based stuff will become collectors items. In 1975, Congress passed the Metric Conversion Act, which declared metric as the preferred system of the United States, and the U.S. Metric Board was created to implement the conversion. America began testing road signs in kilometers under President Jimmy Carter, who supported efforts to go metric. The power plant where I was an operator was built in that era and some of our instrumentation was in conventional American (PSI) units and some was kPa (1000 newtons per square meter) with a conversion chart next to the device so we could know what was actually going on. Some temperatures were Fahrenheit and others were Celsius with a conversion chart. The US Metric Board was Founded: December 23, 1975 and Ceased operations: September 30, 1982. It only took the US Government seven years to figure out that this wasn't going to fly but it appears that our world wide trade situation is going to accomplish it whether we like it or not. 1
squonk 41,161 #28 Posted March 22, 2022 (edited) Imagine the fun of putting a long block under Used car warranty in an 85 Chevette. The rebuilt engine supplied by the warranty company was a 78 vintage and all of the studs and special bolts of the original engine were metric. Had to go to a scrap yard and strip another engine just for the hardware. Then there was the drilling out of all the bracket holes Oh, it only paid flat rate warranty time. But it seemed I always had to do some filing/sanding to get them to fit. Then out of frustration I measured a few.... nice even METRIC dimensions.... Yep that's what I found too, that's the reason I was asking if anyone had a better place to find a decent assortment .
