International Harvester RED FYI

Recommended Posts

Brockport Bill

i recall past threads about using International Harvester Red --- and its availability, or lack of??? I have primarily used Regal Red on the WH tractors -- but have one that had IH Red as color for some parts so needed more IH Red to finish job.... can't find it in the typical stores -- and typically the spray cans of any color vary bwtween 5-6-7-8 dollars - so i called Tractor Supply here in the

Hudson Valley of NY - none of their stores in tri state have it per their staff --- and neither do ACE have it - nor can they get it -- so i went online to Home Depot to order - - yes, they have it -- online only, and no single cans -- have to order pack of 6 - which i found interesting esecially since its $32 per case, which per can,1423194865_whIHRedcan.jpg.ad4ef41df7211f1222ad4f6d9756dde6.jpg is pretty cheap. Then went ot Amazon -- yikes, they have it available for $15.70 per can -- ouch ! So wondering if supply chain issue - or lack of sales volume etc  -- but for whatever reason -- i thought some of you may want to order some inventory now if IH red is your preferred color --- p.s. ACE does make and sell a ACE version of RUST STOP in IH Red.

We do a fair amount of online ordering for our herd.

The jungle site is just plain... overpriced... On a lot of chemicals.

Possibly to do with shipping but I do not know that's a fact.

That is one of the reasons I've been buying less and less from that site.

A word to the wise on that Ace brand paint. It works... okay... at best.

I'm getting away from anything Rust-olem these days. Not that their product is no good I just can't get them out of the :ranting: can!

Can of regal, can of self etch & a can of rusty primer and now a can of aircraft remover the valve quits with the can half empty or better.

Not the little push thingy on the top the valve INSIDE the can. So the only recourse it to pitch it or get to out with the pistol. The latter option doesn't work so hot.

My beef to Rust-olem has always been take a pic of the receipt & barcode and email it to them and I have always gotten a voucher for another one..... that does the same thing! :angry-banghead:

Never a reason why this happens tho. Getting old now so going to switch horses (not in midstream tho ) and not waiting for them to come out with an app to get paint out of a can!

Ok thanks for letting me rant.... :soapbox:

Couple of ACE branded ones I did like EB.

We found that the Ace international Red flowed fine but didn't cover well.

Your issue with the rustoleum is definitely understandable.

I'm not sure I could give you a ratio of good to bad. We find that it's best to use the whole can at once whenever possible.

I've certainly returned more than a can or two over the last few years...

What!?!?! but your projects go on for decades! :ychain:

I've tried that but even then has happened when half done. Last can on the shelf and you wanted to giterdone. That's when I start throwing things.

I've had a few that get half or 3/4 empty and stop. I've gotten one or two that wouldn't even come out when brand new.

When they work, they work great. And that's most of the cans so we just stick with it.

Trina likes the way it flows out as it's being sprayed and the 2x that we almost always use covers red oxide primer really well.

Not since Valspar had their Restoration Series IH Red in both spray cans, quarts and gallons has there been an IH red that I have liked or has held up as well.

'Nuff said.

@WHX?? I totally agree about Rust-Oleum. The quality and availibilty of their paint stinks. I think they are trying to coddle the tree huggers and have changed their formula.

Can't say as I have looked into that to confirm it but there's logic to your statement

Regal Red is back at Lowes. !!! :banana-wrench::banana-wrench::banana-wrench:

I rarely have a problem with the paint not coming out of the can. I have had those nozzles clog up but I keep about 6 spares. I soak them in thinner for a few days... good as new. The nozzles are also handy for my $1.00 cans of sno-jet that were shipped with NO NOZZLES!! :occasion-xmas:

Though that was the problem too Mike so kept them in a baby food jar with thinner no luck. Even robbed one off a new can no luck.

Never tried the 2x stuff EB .... just figured I was just gonna get a 2x screwin....

Not that your shop is often cold, but I have noticed that the Aircraft remover does not spray if it is cold. At $13 per can it should spray no matter what.

I’ve used rustoleum rattle cans on 4 tractors and never had an issue… I use them up and toss them… warm weather only, outside…

I am no expert. Paint to look sorta good and keep rust away. That’s my goal. It works…

I'm with there too Brian. I like their product but think they just have a dispensing problem and don't want to deal with it from some dumb bean counter reason.

Headed that way too eventually I ever pick it up from the masters but will still gotta wield a rattle for those little jobs.

Way ahead of you bro... did this at work since garden hoses ain't out yet and hot wash water at he shop. Set the can in front of the warehouse unit heater and fired it up. Can was nice and warm and shook the snot out of it. Boyles law of gasses ya know.

Funny thing is the can of strip klean from wally world no problems which I never heated up. Did get the 161 block fairly decent. That orginal Kohler paint does come off hard tho. :)

Handy Don

One thing I've realized with Rustoleum is to ALWAYS check the date code on the can when purchasing. Even "shaking the snot" out of a can cannot always break up the congealed stuff inside. THAT is what is clogging the inner tube. I accidentally got a can that was five years old not too long ago when I was in a hurry. I shook it for at least 15 minutes and then started spraying--clogged about half-way empty. I'm tempted to see if one of those paint mixers will hold a rattle can and let it rip for a good long while.

It was pretty good stuff, especially when hardner was used in the mix. I may be wrong, but the Resto series already had hardener in it?

Anyway- I've seen a couple machines painted with it by someone who knew how to paint, and it was excellent.

Was it automotive quality? No, but for $10 or less per quart I never expected it to be. Even so, it could make for some beautiful paint jobs. My Bronco was painted with it 14 years ago, and it has held up well.

No Restoration Series did not have hardener in it. It had to be added.

:text-yeahthat:

Once hardener is added the pot life of paint decreases significantly and it can not be stored long term.

Makes sense. What was the difference between standard Valspar and the Resto series? Best I could tell was about $5 more per quart...
