Full Hydraulic Steering

Batting ideas around in my head for a dream build.  I know of two Ariens GT 20 tractors near me that I may be able to pick up cheap.  Both have full hydro steering.  Would an Eaton 1100 be able to power the steering system from one of those tractors and the lift?  Transmission in the Ariens is a Sunstrand.  I drove one of the Ariens and I love the effortless steering.  In addition the M20 in the Ariens could be used on a Wheel Horse if you used an electric PTO clutch.  Thoughts?  Has anyone done a full hydraulic steering setup on a Wheel Horse?  Thanks.

Look around i recall someone did it on a D series did away with the mid mount lift and used it for the steering...  That would be a Sunstrand piston to piston but i would think an Eaton could do it.

 

M20 is marginally bigger than a M18 but may fit

The 522xi machines have Eaton 1100's and power steering with hydro lift works fine.

@JoeM why couldn’t an Eaton 1100 run a loader then?  Or could it?  Maybe slow and steady?

The charge pump is good for only 725psi and 1.3 gpm at that pressure. Some of that is going to charge the drive motor for motion.

If you do the math, you'll quickly discover that for the dual 18" x 1.75" or more lift or dump cylinders on an FEL you'll: a) have a less lift capacity than with a higher pressure system, and b) it'll take a while to fully extend or retract.

The single hydraulic cylinder on the 3, 4, and 500's is small and isn't being tasked with major loads so it can extend and retract quickly. Also small, on the 522, is the single power steering actuator cylinder.

You'd also need to manage the extra fluid in the system (hoses, valves, cylinders) using a supplemental fluid reservoir.

And lastly, the additional circuits would need their own pressure relief valve (these are built into WH valves used with Eatons)

 

Lift time:

2 x pi x (1.75"/2) ^ 2 x 18 ÷ 231 ÷ 1.3 x 60 = 17 seconds

2 cylinders x area of the cylinder x length of cylinder ÷ 231 cubic inches per gallon ÷ GPM x 60 sec/min = time for full lift with load and no curl and no drive motion

 

Max cylinder force:

2 x pi x (1.75"/2) ^ 2 x 725 = 2,562 lbs

2 cylinders x area of the cylinder x PSI = force exerted by the cylinders

I don't know the weights or geometry of a loader so I can't convert this into usable load lifting but it'll be a lot less than 2,500 lbs.

Just found some load calculations for a basic loader and the working load limit was approximately 10% of the force available from the lift cylinders. It was running 2" cylinders and the pump gave 1,500 psi at 3 GPM so it's force was about 9,500 lbs and the working load limit was about 950.

So for the calc's above for the Eaton, that's only 250 lbs in the bucket.

6 gpm at 1000 psi using (2) 2 inch cylinders is just about the right configuration for the loaders I have built. Speed and power.

On the 520LXI, I used an 8 gpm gear pump and it worked good because I hardly ever run full RPM. About 2/3 engine speed most often, and being water cooled, it works out good. Of course when needed I can dial it up.

The lower pressure keeps me out of trouble.

5 gpm and if I remember 1 3/4" cylinders on my Power King build. Things also change depending on pulley sizes driving the pump

Hi Bill, search for my thread on my 518H with power steering. The Eaton 1100 can certainly do this.
