Fishroe 261 #1 Posted March 10, 2022 How in the world do you put the starter motor back together BRUSHES. The bendix was stuck got that free but I pulled armature out and end cap with brushes. Wish i hadn’t done that

Fishroe 261 #4 Posted March 10, 2022 Great thread! just what I needed there is one thing I would like to get clarified min the kohler service manual it says to align both end caps to the corresponding marks on the starter frame. I see the marks on the frame but can’t tell where they are on the caps or does it really matter. I know, I should’ve paid attention to how they were before taking apart
Handy Don 12,542 #5 Posted March 10, 2022 (edited) It matters because it aligns the brushes in the end cap with the wire windings in the body AND it aligns the thru-bolt holes! Edited March 10, 2022 by Handy Don

Wish i hadn’t done that as i lawn mower mechanic i got to do this a lot. try to push all the brushes into place with the starter ready to be dropped in. in other words take your fingers and pull back the brushes into place that way the starter can be dropped in.
Fishroe 261 #7 Posted March 10, 2022 So both end caps can go on 2 ways will either way work
Fishroe 261 #8 Posted March 10, 2022 I’m going to cut 4 pieces of sheet metal to hold the brushes down, it’s the end cap positions I want to get right. Each end cap can go 2 way’s because of the bolt holes lining up
953 nut 56,015 #9 Posted March 10, 2022 It has been several years since I did one of these. The end cap for the brushes has a small keyway which should line up to a key in the body. the Bendix end cap can go either way.
Fishroe 261 #10 Posted March 10, 2022 Thanks everyone I finally figured it out The frame on mine does have a notch on both ends. If I had sprayed penetrating oil on the bendix I wouldnt have had to take starter off good learning though 3

Only thing to be used on a bendix should be a dry lube. Any oilyish, Is that a word? can collect dust and dirt causing it to stick. If you do use it to unstick it clean it off with some brake cleaner and use say a dry lube or graphite. Doesn't hurt to take a starter part every now and then for inspection and a good blow out. pacer 3,174 #13 Posted March 19, 2022 (edited) Revisiting a topic from a couple wks ago about starters in which one of the questions was "how to get the brushes back in??" I KNEW I had a pic of this very simple shop made gadget that allows the very easy re-install of the brushes .... but of course I could not find the pic at the time. Obviously I ran across it later and figure its worth adding it to the post. I made this up in about 10-15 mins from sheet metal from an old filing cabinet divider, bending it in the bench vise. Handy Don 12,542 #14 Posted March 19, 2022 (edited) We cannot see the picture @pacer If you're using an iPhone, you'll have to reformat from HEIC to JPEG before posting (use edit and export on the Photos app or else do it on your computer). You can edit your post to put in the new image. Edited March 19, 2022 by Handy Don
Fishroe 261 #15 Posted March 19, 2022 I used 2 6” metal scales had to get my wife to hold them while I put the end cap on.
