Deck adjustment

Recommended Posts

I have a 1965 Wheel Horse 655 that I have owned for more than 40 years and I am ashamed to admit I have never really understood the purpose of this deck adjustment. I realize that it limits how far the deck can drop down, but could someone explain why it is there and give me some tips on the proper adjustment for it?

That is your star wheel adjustment.  With mower decks, you want the deck to go down all the way and ride firmly on it's wheels.  That adjustment is more important when using the snow blade.  You can then adjust the height of the blade to not scrape your drive way, like if you want the blade to ride 1/4" up from the pavement.  Does that make sense??  :orcs-cheers:

You can make ‘similar’ adjustments when the deck is attached BUT you are then screwing around with the deck/cutting blade levelness.

Like Steve, said that is for adjusting other attachments heights not your deck. It should be adjusted all the way down when using the deck, many use it to adjust the deck height, but your  actually changing the geometry of how the deck was designed to operate. That's right I used the word geometry here .

At least you didn't throw the calculus word out there. I've always left the deck all the way down but just bought a new deck and started wondering about that adjustment. Thanks for the reply

Adjustor affects any lifted attachment so mid- or rear-attached items like a grader, soil plow, tiller, or rear blade might make use of it.

is there a given procedure to raise the level of cut higher than the rear gage wheel will allow?

Lot of times I have to cut with the deck hanging to get it as high as I want it. Was there ever such a thing as a shorter spindle housing, that would bring the blades up more into the deck to allow for higher cut

Get bigger gauge wheels for the back of the deck (7") then readjust the front to rear level....
