JimSraj 429 #1 Posted March 6, 2022 Just curious. Been moving a big block k301 around a few times in the last months and I’m wondering what these engines weigh in at with the starter/gen and pto removed. Internals all in place, oil pan on. One thing I do know is that if it were much heavier I’d not be able to pick it up any more.

K161 (7hp) = 65 lbs. K181 (8hp) = 65 lbs. K241 (10hp) = 118 lbs. K301 (12hp) = 118 lbs. K321 (14hp) = 118 lbs. K341 (16hp) = 122 lbs. K582 (23hp) = 187 lbs. KT17 (17hp) = 118 lbs. KT19 (19hp) = 121lbs. KT21 (21hp) = 124 lbs. The Lombardini diesel I am installing is 190lbs 1

Handy Don 12,218 #4 Posted March 6, 2022 Gave up lifting that kind of thing some years ago. Get a helper or use a hoist. Not interested in a proving that I can give myself a permanent injury.
SPINJIM 1,981 #5 Posted March 6, 2022 If you can find a used piece of medical equipment called a patient lift, made by Hoyer or Invacare, it will lift up to 500 pounds. I picked one up for $100, and used it for the K301 in the picture and for an Onan P220. Probably saved myself $500 in doctor bills and physical therapy. Check Craigslist or Facebook. Good luck. Save your back. 2

953 nut 55,228 #9 Posted March 11, 2022 I have a lift table from Harbor Freight that is a real back-saver. Roll it right up to the tractor and pump it up to the height of the frame and slide the engine from the frame to the table, no lifting. It will lift an entire tractor and is great for lifting into the bed of a pick up truck too.

JimSraj 429 #11 Posted March 11, 2022 Gonna have to look into them. Hey Squonk, nice muffler! I made one similar to that but I think it’s a bit heavy to hang off engine like that. I used q” pipe and a 15” piece of 3” exhaust. Welded baffles in the pipe and drill holes in it as well. Kind of a fun project but it doesn’t really muffle the exhaust sound much. squonk 41,105 #12 Posted March 11, 2022 @ebinmaine has that muffler now. I use schedule 80 black iron pipe. Much smaller one on that tractor now. I had issues with noise on that engine. Turned out the ign timing was late.

I have a bracket that leads down to the frame. As for lifting heavy engines, I have a Trina for that. She'll readily lift anything up to about 125 lb or so. I'm in process of installing a chain falls in the workshop to be able to have Machinery do the work for us.
