Watch Steves video a few times, print out the exploded transmission parts drawing and go get your hands dirty. There not hard to fix and lots of help here.  I really enjoy rebuilding these transmissions

i am not hating i’m just telling you that i like theese old tractors and i wouldn’t have any fun a a mtd

Fair enough...  Are you actually in Lancaster, or nearby?  A-Z Tractor is in Bethel, about an hour away, he always has a good supply of new and used parts, very good to work with.  There's also a place in Denver, maybe half an hour depending on where you are.  Plus a whole bunch of vendors here on the forum, and a list of new parts suppliers here:

It's not the end of the world to break a trans, yet. So enjoy YOUR tractor the way you want.

It can be fixed or grab another trans from AZ tractors. You should put a bigger tougher 8 speed trans with 1 1/8" axles on there if you do the heavy pulling dragging etc. It will bolt right on the frame but will need some tweaking for the brake/clutch stuff. We can help guide you on it. Then fix that 4 speed while it's on the bench.

Worth the hassle usually.  Unless you use your parking brake often, an 8 speed is pretty easy.  Otherwise go for a 6 speed and your brakes will be the same too.

There’s a guy in Malvern that advertises a lot on CL and MP who seems to specialize in transmissions.

Not real close, I'm in Phoenixville, Chester County, about an hour east of Denver.

 

The place I'm thinking of is Red Run Repair, on Fivepointville Rd. in Stevens.  The owner's name is Nelson Zimmerman, and he has several other guys working for him.  I can't personally vouch for their work, I just talked to Nelson about a C-160 he had for sale last summer.  They do a good bit of work on Wheel Horse and other garden tractors, as well as larger equipment.  I don't know if he would want to tackle a transmission, but he might.  Maybe some of the other guys here know the place, or can suggest somebody else to rebuild yours if you don't want to do it yourself.

 

Nelson's father-in-law lives and works right around the corner, on Red Run Rd.  He also buys and fixes up old garden tractors, including Wheel Horse, on a much smaller scale.

I don't know if he's a member here, but he does usually show up with a trailer full of used parts for sale at the Big Show every year.  He's basically at the intersection of Rtes. 30 and 352 in Malvern.

By the way @857lover...  If you've never been to the big Wheel Horse show, this would be a really good year for you and your buddy @danweikert21 to attend.  It's just over an hour from where you are, at the fairgrounds in Arendtsville/Biglerville, the first weekend after Father's Day every year, June 24-25 this year.  You'll see all kinds of Wheel Horses, from fully restored trailer queens to barely-made-it-off-the-trailer rust buckets, and everything in between.  You'll even see some pulling tractors, customs, and probably a motorcycle-looking thing made from WH parts.  It's a great time, and an excellent way to meet all kinds of screwy individuals, get some ideas and find some parts!

hey everyone just read the thread. thanks for helping my freind out. i got him into wheel horses proably 2 years ago and its been fun as you all proably know i got pulled, AGAIN. leaves me laughing and wondering what im doing wrong and why i tractor with more power and weight would still get pulled by a smaller tractor. LOL

so i have a transmission with 3 forward and one reverse which transmission should i put in i want it to be easy swap 6 or 8 speed

Easiest swap will be a 6 speed.  It might not be the easiest to find compared to an 8 speed though.

jeez i wish i had someone to help me out who’s done a swap before but i watched a couple videos but they don’t go into detail about what modifications they had to do for the breaks or the pulley

We’ve talked about this before… it’s not terrible.  6 speed will be a direct swap for the brake.  I can’t remember if the input shaft on the 6 speed is the same as the 3 speed or 8 speed.  Either way, finding a stock sized pulley with a different shaft bore is easy.  8 speed however, the brake is slightly different.  My 502 has an 8 speed in it and I just had to play with bending the brake rod until it worked well, I think.

I had something happen just like that to me on my charger 12 automatic, when I split it open the strainer somehow fell out of the casing and got lodged between two gears. Removed the ground up strainer and replaced with a new one, I also rebuilt the pump as I didn’t know if any metal shavings migrated in. After all was said and done the transmission runs like new.
